Francis Cubbon
Captain (British Army and Royal Marines), Captain Francis Richard Cubbon (26 November 18929 June 1917) was an Air observer, aerial observer and flying ace in the World War I, First World War. In conjunction with his pilots, he was credited with 21 aerial victories. Early life and service Francis Richard Cubbon was the only surviving son of his parents' marriage. His father was Captain Richard Cubbon, a supply and transport officer of the Indian Army. Cubbon was born in London,Franks ''et.al.'' (1997), p. 12. but spent most of his youth in Poona, India.Guttman & Dempsey (2009), p. 78. A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is a Wikimedia movement affinity group for contributors with shared goals. Albert Ball
Albert Ball, (14 August 1896 – 7 May 1917) was a British fighter pilot during the First World War. At the time of his death he was the United Kingdom's leading flying ace, with 44 victories, and remained its fourth-highest scorer behind Edward Mannock, James McCudden, and George McElroy. Born and raised in Nottingham, Ball joined the Sherwood Foresters at the outbreak of the First World War and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in October 1914. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) the following year, and gained his pilot's wings on 26 January 1916. Joining No. 13 Squadron RFC in France, he flew reconnaissance missions before being posted in May to No. 11 Squadron, a fighter unit. Captain Frederick James Harry Thayre (20 October 1894 – 9 June 1917) was a British two-seater flying ace in World War I who, in conjunction with his observer-gunners, was credited with twenty aerial victories. Background Thayre was born in London on 20 October 1894. He lived in Littlehampton, Sussex, before the war. Frederick Libby
Captain Frederick Libby (15 July 1891 – 9 January 1970) became the first American flying ace, while serving as an observer in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Libby transferred to the United States Army Air Service on 15 September 1917. He returned to the United States and helped raise war funding through Liberty Loans. He was then invalided out of military service with spondylitis. Despite his disability, and the predictions that he would die early as a result of his condition, Libby lived into his late seventies, prospering as an oil prospector and businessman. He was a founder of Western Air Lines. In his latter years, he wrote his memoirs, ''Horses Don't Fly'', which was published after his death on 9 January 1970. Bloody April
Bloody April was the (largely successful) British air support operation during the Battle of Arras in April 1917, during which particularly heavy casualties were suffered by the Royal Flying Corps at the hands of the German ''Luftstreitkräfte''. The tactical, technological, and training differences between the two sides ensured the British suffered a casualty rate nearly four times as great as their opponents. The losses were so disastrous that it threatened to undermine the morale of entire squadrons. North-West Frontier Province (1901–1955)
The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP; ps, شمال لویدیځ سرحدي ولایت, ) was a Chief Commissioner's Province of British India, established on 9 November 1901 from the north-western districts of the Punjab Province. Following the referendum in 1947 to join either Pakistan or India, the province voted hugely in favour of joining Pakistan and it acceded accordingly on 14th August, 1947. It was dissolved to form a unified province of West Pakistan in 1955 upon creation of One Unit Scheme and was re-established in 1970.
