Francis Barrett (occultist)
Francis Barrett (born probably in London around 1770–1780, died ''after'' 1802) was an English occultist. Background Barrett, an Englishman, claimed himself to be a student of chemistry, metaphysics and natural occult philosophy. He was known to be an extreme eccentric who gave lessons in the magical arts in his apartment and fastidiously translated Kabbalistic and other ancient texts into English, such as von Welling's work, ''Philosophy of The Universe'' circa 1735, from German (1801). According to his biographer Francis X. King, Barrett's parents were humble folk married in the parish of St. Martin's in the Fields on 29 September 1772. Francis Thornton Barrett (20 September 1838 – 21 January 1919), LL.D., was the first Librarian (from 1877 to 1899) of The Mitchell Library in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. As City Librarian (from May 1901 to 1914), he initiated and developed public libraries throughout the city. He was also a founding member, and the first President (from 1908 to 1910), of the Scottish Library Association. Francis Barrett (2 August 1872 – 22 March 1907) was a Scottish footballer, who played as a goalkeeper. He was born in Dundee. Barrett played for Dundee Harp before joining Dundee Football Club upon its foundation in 1893. While with the Dark Blues, he would make 49 total appearances for the club in their first three seasons, and would win two caps for Scotland in 1894 and 1895. In September 1896, he signed with Newton Heath (now Manchester United). He made 132 appearances for the club, scoring no goals. In May 1900, he left for New Brighton Tower. In 1901, he briefly returned to Manchester, making eight appearances for Manchester City. Frank Barrett (born 9 October 1953 in Panteg, Monmouthshire, Wales) is a travel writer, editor and author. He worked for ''The Mail on Sunday'' in London from May 1994 until September 2018. Background Born in Pontypool, his father was a policeman and he spent most of his childhood living in the Police Station, Tintern in the Wye Valley. He was educated at Monmouth School and the Polytechnic of North London. He is married with two children. Career After graduation Barrett worked as a trainee at ''Travel Trade Gazette'' for three years.
