Francesco Vecellio
Francesco Vecellio (about 1475 – 1560) was a Venetian painter of the Italian Renaissance. He was the elder brother and close collaborator of the painter Tiziano Vecellio ("Titian"). Vecellio was born in Pieve di Cadore, in the Republic of Venice, in either 1475 or 1483; he was the elder brother and close collaborator of the painter Tiziano Vecellio ("Titian"). He was a soldier, and fought in battles at Vienna and at Verona. He then worked as a painter; in 1530 he painted the shutters of the organ of the church of San Salvador in Venice. From about 1534 he worked as a wood-engraver. He painted an ''Annunciation'' for San Nicola di Bari, now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, along with ''Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome and Saint Dorothy ''Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome and Saint Dorothy'' is a 1516 oil on canvas painting, now in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, which purchased it from the McLellan collection in 1856. Gallerie Dell'Accademia
The Gallerie dell'Accademia is a museum gallery of pre-19th-century art in Venice, northern Italy. It is housed in the Scuola della Carità on the south bank of the Grand Canal, within the sestiere of Dorsoduro. It was originally the gallery of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, the art academy of Venice, from which it became independent in 1879, and for which the Ponte dell'Accademia and the Accademia boat landing station for the ''vaporetto'' water bus are named. The Madonna's pose is based on that of Raphael's ''Esterhazy Madonna''. Its attribution is debated. It was previously attributed to the school of Titian, perhaps an autograph work by his brother Francesco Vecellio or by Polidoro Lanzani. It was later identified as an autograph work by Titian himself due to a 1680 print by Le Fébre attributing the image to Titian, though it has now been definitively attributed to Vecellio. Wood-engraver
Wood engraving is a printmaking technique, in which an artist works an image or ''matrix'' of images into a block of wood. Functionally a variety of woodcut, it uses relief printing, where the artist applies ink to the face of the block and prints using relatively low pressure. By contrast, ordinary engraving, like etching, uses a metal plate for the matrix, and is printed by the intaglio method, where the ink fills the ''valleys'', the removed areas. As a result, wood engravings deteriorate less quickly than copper-plate engravings, and have a distinctive white-on-black character. Thomas Bewick developed the wood engraving technique in Great Britain at the end of the 18th century. His work differed from earlier woodcuts in two key ways. First, rather than using woodcarving tools such as knives, Bewick used an engraver's burin (graver).
