Francesco Silvestri, O.P. (''ca''. 1474 – 19 September 1528) was an Italian Dominican theologian.) and Franciscus Sylvester de Sylvestris., group=note He wrote a notable commentary on Thomas of Aquinas's ''Summa contra gentiles'', and served as Master General of his order from 1525 until his death. Life Francesco Silvestri was born at Ferrara in about 1474. At the age of fourteen he joined the Dominican Order. In 1516 he was made a master in theology. He was prior first in his native city and then at Bologna, and in the provincial chapter held at Milan in 1519 he was chosen vicar-general of the Lombard congregation of his order. Having discharged this office for the allotted term of two years, he became regent of the college at Bologna where he remained for a considerable time. He was also inquisitor of Bologna from 1519 until 1525. Paolo Butigella (1475 – October 9, 1531) was the Master of the Order of Preachers from 1530 to 1531. Biography Paolo Butigella was a native of Padua. He joined the Dominican Order in 1494 at the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Ferrara. He served as vicar general of the Congregation of Lombardy 1516-18 and again 1522–24. From 1520 to 1522, he was prior at the monastery of San Domenico in Bologna. He participated in the order's general chapters in Mantua in 1516 and in Forlì in 1522. On December 31, 1525, Pope Clement VII named him inquisitor of Ferrara and Modena and on February 23, 1529 made him vicar general of the Order of Preachers. The general chapter held in Rome in 1530 elected him Master of the Order of Preachers. Juan García de Loaysa y Mendoza (1478 in Talavera de la Reina, near Toledo, Spain – 22 April 1546 in Madrid, Spain) was a Spanish Archbishop of Seville and Cardinal. Biography His parents were nobles; at a very early age he entered the Dominican convent at Salamanca. Its severe discipline, however, affected his delicate constitution and he was transferred to the convent of St. Paul in Peñafiel where he was professed in 1495. Osanna of Mantua (also Hosanna) (17 January 1449 – 18 June 1505) was an Italian Dominican tertiary who gained notice as a stigmatic and mystic. Life Osanna was the daughter of the nobles Niccolò Andreasi, whose family had originated in Hungary, and of Agnese Gonzaga. She was reported to have had a vision of angels at age six. Feeling called to consecrated life, she rejected a marriage arranged by her father. Unable to explain her attraction to religious life to her father, in 1463, at the age of 14, she secretly received the religious habit of the Third Order of St. Dominic. She had been drawn to this Order from her admiration of two members of the Order, Catherine of Siena, and her contemporary, Friar Girolamo Savonarola, who both represented to her lives of strict self-denial. Sylvester Mazzolini, in Italian Silvestro Mazzolini da Prierio, in Latin Sylvester Prierias. (1456/1457 – 1527) was a theologian born at Priero, Piedmont; he died at Rome. Prierias perished when the imperial troops forced their way into the city, leading to the Sack of Rome. At the age of fifteen, he entered the Dominican Order. Passing brilliantly through a course of studies, he taught theology at Bologna, Pavia (by invitation of the senate of Venice), and in Rome, whither he was called by Julius II in 1511. In 1515, he was appointed Master of the Sacred Palace, filling that office until his death. His writings cover a vast range, including treatises on the planets, the power of the demons, history, homiletics, the works of St. Thomas Aquinas and the primacy of the popes.
