Fram Reykjavík Basketball
(English: Fram's basketball department) was the basketball department of Knattspyrnufélagið Fram, located in Reykjavík, Iceland. Men's basketball History In 1973 Fram participated in the first edition of the Icelandic Second Division and became its first winner. From the following season, the 1974–75 season, Fram Reykjavík began their leadership in the First Division and their series of wins which ended in the 1985–86 season when they won their fourth title. Fram's best season came in 1981–1982 when the team won the Icelandic cup and finished second in the Úrvalsdeild. The basketball department disbanded after the 1986–87 season but had a brief revitalization in the 2010s, playing three seasons in the Second Division from 2010 to 2013 and making it to the playoffs in 2012 and 2013. Reykjavík ( ; ) is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It is located in southwestern Iceland, on the southern shore of Faxaflói bay. Knattspyrnufélagið Fram
''Knattspyrnufélagið Fram'' (''Fram Football Club'') is an Icelandic sports club, best known for its football and handball teams. It was founded on 1 May 1908 in Reykjavík. It was based at Safamýri, in the Háaleiti og Bústaðir district near Reykjavík city centre before slowly moving operations to the newly established Grafarholt district. The football team currently plays in the second division, the 1. deild karla after being relegated in the 2014 season. The club also has strong handball teams; the men's team won the Icelandic championship in 2013. Other sports offered by the club include basketball, taekwondo and skiing. Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup
The Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup (Icelandic: Bikarkeppni KKÍ), also known as VÍS bikarinn for sponsorship reasons, is an annual professional basketball competition between clubs in Iceland. It is Iceland's first-tier cup competition, and is not to be confused with Iceland's former second-tier cup competition, the Company Cup. History and format The first edition of the Icelandic Cup championship took place in 1965, and was won by Ármann. In 1968 and 1969, the cup competition was not held, but it has been held regularly every year from 1970 onward. Teams in Úrvalsdeild karla and Division I have an automatic bye to the Final 32 while lower league teams might have to play preliminary rounds for a place, depending on the number of teams. Flosi Sigurðsson
Flosi Sigurðsson (born 10 December 1960) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national team. He played college basketball for the University of Washington. Basketball Flosi started his senior team career with Fram where he played until he went to the United States to study at Capital High School in 1979. After graduating, he received offers from several prominent colleges, and eventually chose the University of Washington. National team career Flosi debuted with the Icelandic national team in March 1980, scoring 7 points against Armenia. In total, he played 15 games for Iceland. John Johnson (basketball, Born 1956)
Jonathan M. Johnson (born 12 July 1955) is an American former basketball player and coach. He was part of the first influx of foreign basketball players in Iceland in the late 1970s. In 1979, he set the single game scoring record in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla when he scored 71 points for Fram against ÍS. In 1980, he won the Icelandic championship and the Icelandic cup as an assistant coach with Valur. Early life Johnson was born and grew up in Los Angeles. Professional career In August 1978, Johnson signed as a player-coach with Fram in the Icelandic second-tier 1. deild karla. In his debut on 23 September, he scored 55 points in Fram's 93–81 victory against Ármann in the annual pre-season Reykjavík Basketball Tournament. Símon Ólafsson
Símon Ólafsson (born 15 July 1956) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of Icelandic national team. He won the Icelandic championship in 1976 and the Icelandic Cup 1975 and 1982. In 1981, he was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year. In 2001, Símon was named as one of the twelve best Icelandic men's basketball players of the 20th century. Playing career Símon started his career with Ármann in 1973 at the age of 17. In 1975, Símon enrolled in Cornell University where he also trained basketball. On 3 January 1976, he played again with Ármann in a 90-89 victory against ÍR, scoring a game high 33 points. Valray Bracey (born October 27, 1959) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He played college basketball for Central Michigan University and later professionally in Iceland where he was named the Úrvalsdeild Foreign Player of the Year in 1982, the same year he won the Icelandic Basketball Cup. Early life Bracey was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, one of seven siblings. Playing career College career Bracey started his college career with Delta College where he averaged 17 points per game and was an All-Region junior college pick. Icelandic Basketball League System
The Icelandic basketball league system, or Icelandic basketball league pyramid, is a series of interconnected competitions for basketball clubs in Iceland. The system has a hierarchical format with a promotion and demotion system between competitions at different levels. Men There are currently four different competitions on the pyramid - the 1st tier Úrvalsdeild, the 2nd tier Division I, the 3rd tier Division II, and the 4th tier Division III. Davíð Janis
Davíð Janis (born Anis; 4 February 1946 – 12 November 2021) was an Icelandic and Indonesian basketball player. He became one of the first foreign basketball players to play in Iceland when he joined KR in 1970. Early life Davíð was born and grew up on the island Sumatra in Indonesia. Playing career Davíð played for the junior national team of Indonesia before he went to study in the University of Arizona, where he changed his name to ''David Janis''. In 1970, he moved with his Icelandic wife to Iceland where he started playing for KR. He played for KR in the 1970–71 FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup and in 1972 he won the Reykjavík Tournament Championship with the team.
