''Fragum erugatum'' is a small species of Cockle (bivalve), cockle, a marine Bivalvia, bivalve Mollusca, mollusc in the Family (biology), family Cardiidae. It is found in the shallow seas off the coast of Western Australia. It is commonly known as the Hamelin cockle, cardiid cockle or heart cockle. Taxonomy This species was first described by Ralph Tate in 1889 as ''Fragum erugatum''. More recently, it has been given several other names but these have since been synonymized with ''Fragum erugatum''. Some authorities now consider that it is sufficiently distinct from other members of the genus ''Fragum'' as to warrant being placed in a genus of its own as ''Microfragum erugatum''. Ralph Tate
Ralph Tate (11 March 1840 – 20 September 1901) was a British-born botanist and geologist, who was later active in Australia. Early life Tate was born at Alnwick in Northumberland, the son of Thomas Turner Tate (1807–1888), a teacher of mathematics and science, and his wife Frances (née Hunter). He was nephew to George Tate (topographer), George Tate (1805–1871), Natural history, naturalist and archaeologist, an active member of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club. Tate was educated at the Cheltenham Training College and at the Royal School of Mines. Scientific career In 1861 Tate was appointed teacher of natural science at the Philosophical Institution in Belfast. In reproductive biology, a hermaphrodite () is an organism that has both kinds of reproductive organs and can produce both gametes associated with male and female sexes.
