The Four on the Fourth Road Race is an annual foot race run held each July 4 in Bridgton, Maine, United States The United States of America (U.S.A. or USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America. It grew from 169 participants in its first year (1976) to approximately 2000 runners and walkers for the 2011 race. The first five years were directed by Phoebe and Jerry Levine of North Bridgton, while years six through 25 were directed by Loraine and Jay Spenciner of Bridgton. Since 2002, the race has been directed by the Four on the Fourth Board (local residents closely associated with the Bridgton Public Library). Bridgton is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,418 at the 2020 census. A resort area in Maine's Lakes Region, Bridgton is home to Bridgton Academy, a private preparatory school, and the Four on the Fourth Road Race. Bridgton is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. History The undeveloped land was first called ''Pondicherry''. It was granted in 1768 by the Massachusetts General Court to Moody Bridges and a group of proprietors. Settlement began in 1770 at what is now North Bridgton, where a tavern was built. The community was organized in 1779 as Bridgetown Plantation, named after Moody Bridges, and then incorporated on February 7, 1794 as Bridgton.
