Four Corners (Newark)
The Four Corners Historic District is the intersection of Broad and Market streets in Newark, New Jersey. It is the site of the city's earliest settlement and the heart of Downtown Newark that at one time was considered the busiest intersection in the United States. The area that radiates 22 square blocks from the crossroads is a state and federal historic district. The crossing became the center of the town soon after establishment in 1666; the home of founder Robert Treat was located at the southwest corner. During the next centuries it remained the focal point of the city which grew around it. By 1834 the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company had established a terminal to the south and in 1869 the Newark and New York Railroad had one to the north. Newark City Hall
Newark City Hall is located at Government Center in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The building was built in 1902 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 17, 1978. History The building is a five-story Beaux Arts style building with a golden dome; built at a cost of $2.6 million. The interior of the building features carved marble, a grand central staircase, stained-glass skylights, decorative plaster and wrought-iron works. Developer Harry Grant paid to have the dome covered in 24 carat gold in 1986. The building was renovated in 2006 at a cost of $18 Million. Bamberger's
Bamberger's was a department store chain with branches primarily in New Jersey and other locations in Delaware, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania. The chain was headquartered in Newark, New Jersey. History 1892–1912 Newark was known for manufacturing in the last half of the 19th century. By 1892, Newark was the fourth largest American city and it manufactured products from leather to jewelry along with it being a rail hub. It also had a large Jewish population. It was these factors that lead Felix Fuld, Louis M. Frank, and Louis Bamberger to found the store on Dec 13, 1892 on Market Street on the corner of Halsey Street in Newark, New Jersey, taking over the location of a bankrupt store Hill & Craig. Halsey Street (Newark)
Halsey Street is a north-south street in Downtown Newark, New Jersey, which runs in between and parallel to Broad Street and Washington Street. It passes through the city's four historic districts: James Street Commons- Washington Park at the north, the abutting Military Park and Four Corners and, after a two block break, Lincoln Park at the south. Halsey and its side streets have long been the one of city's corridors for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Since the 2000s, the street has undergone a revival as new projects have generated renewed residential, cultural and commercial activities, including a restaurant row. Prudential Financial, based in Newark, New Jersey, has constructed a number of buildings to house its headquarters downtown in the Four Corners district. In addition to its own offices, the corporation has financed large projects in the city, including Gateway Center and Prudential Center. Prudential has about 5,200 employees in the city. Essex County Courthouse
The Essex County Veterans Courthouse is located in Newark, New Jersey, United States. It was built in 1904 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 26, 1975. The building, designed by Cass Gilbert, has a four-story rotunda topped with a Tiffany skylight. It features artwork from some of the most well known artists of the American Renaissance period including ''Seated Lincoln'' by Gutzon Borglum. The annex was completed the 1960s. The Gateway Center is a commercial complex in Newark, New Jersey. Located downtown just west of Newark Penn Station between Raymond Boulevard and Market Street; McCarter Highway runs through the complex. Skyways and pedestrian malls interconnect all of the office towers, a Hilton Hotel, the train station, and the Newark Legal Center. Government Center (Newark)
Government Center is a district within the city of Newark in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is considered a part of Downtown Newark and is named for the presence of government buildings centered on a plaza known as Federal Square. It hosts the US Citizen and Immigration Services, the Social Security Administration, and the US Attorney's Office for New Jersey as well as many other federal agencies. It is part of the Four Corners Historic District. The district is just south of Four Corners on the east side of Broad Street and the Prudential Center and north of Newark Symphony Hall and The Coast neighborhood.
