Foulis Baronets
There have been three baronetcies created for persons with the surname Foulis, one in the Baronetage of England and two in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. The Foulis Baronetcy, of Ingleby in the County of York, was created in the Baronetage of England on 6 February 1620 for David Foulis. The third Baronet sat as Member of Parliament for Northallerton. The title became extinct on the death of the ninth Baronet in 1876. The Foulis, later Liston-Foulis Baronetcy, of Colinton near Edinburgh, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 7 June 1634 for Alexander Foulis, with remainder to heirs male whatsoever. The second Baronet was a Member of the Scottish Parliament for Midlothian and served as Lord Justice Clerk with the judicial title of Lord Colinton. Baronetage Of England
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. The Baronetage of England comprises all baronetcies created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707.
