Foster Cove Archeological Site, designated RI-CH-2 and later RI-16 in state surveys, is a prehistoric archaeological site in Charlestown, Rhode Island Charlestown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 7,997 at the 2020 census. History Charlestown is named after King Charles II, and was incorporated in 1738. The area was formerly part of the town .... Located within the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, it is a Native American habitation site dating to the Woodland Period. It was identified in 1974 during a survey of the former Naval Auxiliary Air Station Charlestown by state archaeologists, in which two trenches included finds from the site. Test pits were dug in 1979 by the state to determine the extent of the site. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Charlestown is a town in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 7,997 at the 2020 census. History Charlestown is named after King Charles II, and was incorporated in 1738. The area was formerly part of the town of Westerly. It was in turn divided and the part north of the Pawcatuck River became the town of Richmond in 1747. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (37.86%) is water. The town is bordered by Westerly on the west; Richmond on the north; and Hopkinton on the northwest; and South Kingstown on the east. The village of Charlestown is in the southeast part of the town, Quonochontaug is in the southwest, and Carolina is on the northern border of the town. Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge
The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge situated along the shore of Ninigret Pond. It is characterized by salt marshes, kettle ponds, freshwater wetlands, maritime shrub lands, and forests, and it is seasonally inhabited by over 250 species of birds. The area was originally used for farming, prior to being utilized in World War II as a Naval Auxiliary landing field. It was designated as a refuge in 1970 upon the transfer of of land to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Subsequent transfers and purchases increased the protected area to approximately . During the winter months, black ducks, Canada geese, and diving ducks are especially prominent on the pond, while various species of migrating raptors are also common. Wildlife refuge staff also maintain a piping plover nesting program. Naval Auxiliary Air Station Charlestown
Naval Auxiliary Air Station Charlestown is located in Charlestown, Rhode Island, United States. It was a satellite airfield to the nearby Quonset Naval Air Station. It is located within the boundaries of the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge. History Atlantic Airport, as it was then known, was founded around 1931. In 1942, the site of the Atlantic Airport was reused by the Navy to construct NAAS Charlestown. It was constructed with three runways. It then became a satellite of the nearby Naval Air Station Quonset Point. Former US President George Herbert Walker Bush trained here as a Naval Aviator before deploying to the Pacific in World War II. The airport was used for the Navy Air Navigation Project to test navigation aids and traffic control systems. The runways were used for drag racing between 1958 and 1959.
