Alcée Fortier
Alcée Fortier (June 5, 1856 – February 14, 1914) was a renowned Professor of Romance Languages at Tulane University in New Orleans. In the late 19th and early 20th century, he published numerous works on language, literature, Louisiana history and folklore, Louisiana Creole languages, and personal reminiscence. He had French Creole ancestry dating to the colonial period. He became president of the Modern Language Association and the Louisiana Historical Society, was appointed to the State Board of Education, and was active in the American Folklore Society and the New Orleans Academy of Sciences. Early life and education Fortier was born in St. James Parish, on Petit Versailles Plantation, which was owned by his maternal grandfather Valcour Aime and had long been cultivated for sugar cane. The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist truck bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States, on April 19, 1995. Fortier Township is a township in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 116 at the 2000 census. Fortier Township was established in 1881, and named after Joseph Fortier, a pioneer merchant. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (0.30%) is water. Louis Yves Fortier (born September 11, 1935) is a Canadian diplomat, trial and appellate lawyer, arbitrator and corporate director. He served as the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations from August 1988 to December 1991. In August 2013, he became a member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee and the Queen's Privy Council for Canada. He also served as the national president of the Canadian Bar Association from 1982 to 1983. Early life and family Fortier was born in Quebec City in 1935. His father was a regional service agent for passengers on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Yves Oscar Fortier, OC, FRSC (August 17, 1914 – August 19, 2014) was a Canadian geologist. He was the director of the Geological Survey of Canada from 1964 to 1973. He led expeditions to the Canadian Arctic in the 1950s and 1960s which identified significant potential oil and gas resources. He died at the age of 100 on August 19, 2014. Sylvie Fortier (born July 31, 1958) is a Canadian former synchronized swimmer. She won medals in Canadian provincial and national competitions, at the World Aquatics Championships, the Pan American Games and the Pan Pacific Games. Fortier was named the 1976 world champion in synchronized swimming for her achievements that year and was a torch bearer for the opening ceremony of the Montreal Summer Olympics. She retired in 1977 aged just 18. Fortier is an inductee of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the Aquatics Hall of Fame. Moïse (Moyse) Fortier (November 6, 1815 – October 17, 1877) was a Quebec businessman and political figure. He was a Liberal member of the House of Commons of Canada representing Yamaska from 1867 to 1872. He was born in Saint-Léon in 1815. Charles Auguste Fortier (born August 4, 1892 in Rockland, Ontario) was a Canadian hockey left wing who signed a contract with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League during the training camp prior to the 1923-24 season but then opted to remain an amateur, and thus never played in the NHL. Marc Fortier (born February 26, 1966) is a Canadian former ice hockey centre. Fortier played in the National Hockey League for the Quebec Nordiques, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings. Biography Fortier was raised in Windsor, Quebec. As a youth, he played in the 1978 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Windsor.
