Fort Road, Edmonton
Fort Road is a discontinuous street in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Historically it was a major route in connecting Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. It was formed on the west side of the Canadian National Railway line that formerly connected the two cities, and crossed the North Saskatchewan River just south of the current Highway 15 bridge. As the city of Edmonton expanded its grid street system, and realigned the highway to Manning Drive, portions of Fort Road ceased to exist. At the intersection of Fort Road and 66th street stands the Transit Hotel, which opened in 1908. This is in the Village of North Edmonton, annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1912. Anthony Henday Drive (Highway 216) is a freeway that encircles Edmonton, Alberta. It is a heavily travelled commuter and truck bypass route with the southwest quadrant serving as a portion of the CANAMEX Corridor that links Canada to the United States and Mexico. Henday is one of the busiest highways in Western Canada, carrying over 108,000 vehicles per day in 2019 at its busiest point near West Edmonton Mall. Split Intersection
A split intersection is a rarely built at-grade variant of the diamond interchange. Compared to a conventional four-leg intersection or road crossing, the arterial road is split into separate carriageways by , allowing a queue of left turning vehicles behind a completed turn into the crossroad without any conflict to oncoming traffic. On the crossroad, the four leg intersection is being replaced by two intersections. The beginning one-way traffic at the fourth leg makes the intersections reduce the number of conflicts similar to a three leg T-intersection to improve traffic flow. A single-point urban interchange (SPUI, or ), also called a single-point interchange (SPI) or single-point diamond interchange (SPDI), is a type of highway interchange. The design was created in order to help move large volumes of traffic through limited amounts of space safely and efficiently. 118 Avenue is the designated name of two major arterial roads in central Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, separated by the Edmonton City Centre Airport.
