Fort Dodge Community School District
Fort Dodge Community School District (FDCSD) is a public school district headquartered in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The district is entirely in Webster County. In addition to Fort Dodge, Badger and Otho are in the district boundaries. It also serves the Coalville census-designated place. History Jesse Ulrich became superintendent in 2018 when all members of the FDCSD school board voted to hire him. In 2018 the district's elementary school boundaries were modified. That year it also placed an enrollment cap in its elementary schools. Butler and Duncombe elementaries however would have eight extra spaces for new students who move into their attendance zones, while Cooper and Feelhaver each have four. Fort Dodge is a city in, and the county seat of, Webster County, Iowa, United States, along the Des Moines River. The population was 24,871 in the 2020 census, a decrease from 25,136 in 2000. Fort Dodge is a major commercial center for North Central and Northwest Iowa. It is located on U.S. Routes 20 and 169. History Fort Dodge traces its beginnings to 1850 when E Company of the 6th Infantry were sent from Fort Snelling to erect and garrison a fort at the junction of the Des Moines River and Lizard Creek. It was originally named Fort Clarke but was renamed Fort Dodge because there was another fort with the same name in Texas. It was named after Henry Dodge, a governor of Wisconsin Territory (which had included Iowa until Iowa became a state in 1846). The fort was abandoned by the Army in 1853. Coalville, Iowa
Coalville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Webster County, Iowa, United States. The population was 610 at the 2010 census. The community is located on U.S. Route 20 near Fort Dodge's large gypsum mines. History Coalville takes its name from the coal mines of the area. It began as one of the northernmost coal mining towns in Iowa. Early settlers were mining coal from outcrops along the Des Moines River by 1860, and in 1870, a mine was opened on Holiday Creek, approximately one mile east of Coalville, with a three-mile tramway to the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad (later the Illinois Central). Later in 1870, a shaft was sunk at Coalville. The Fort Dodge Coal company took over these mines and opened several more in the Coalville area. By 1880, manual labor was being augmented with machinery in these mines. In 1883, the Fort Dodge Coal company employed 350 miners to produce 30 carloads of coal daily.
