Fort Armstrong, Eastern Cape
Fort Armstrong was constructed in 1836 to act as an important military outpost of the British during the Cape Frontier Wars. It has been under attack multiple times and served as a safe haven for the early pioneers of the Kat river area. History Fort Armstrong was constructed in 1836 to protect the Kat rivers valuable source of water. It was named after Captain Armstrong who fought in the area alongside the Cape Mounted Rifles during the 6th War of Land Dispossession. Because of its relative isolation, the fort was designed to operate independently if need be. It had wattle and daub barracks that could accommodate up to 30 mounted men with ordnance stores, a powder magazine, officers quarters, kitchen stables and cells. Fort Armstrong (Alabama)
Fort Armstrong was a stockade fort built in present-day Cherokee County, Alabama during the Creek War. The fort was built to protect the surrounding area from attacks by Red Stick warriors but was also used as a staging area and supply depot in preparation for further military action against the Red Sticks. Background During the War of 1812, members of the Creek tribe became involved in a civil war that pitted peaceful factions (White Sticks) with hostile factions (Red Sticks). The Creek War began when the United States, fearful of the Red Sticks allying themselves with Great Britain, began taking military action against the Red Sticks in response to attacks on settlers in Creek land. After the Battle of Burnt Corn and the Fort Mims massacre, the United States began constructing multiple forts in the Mississippi Territory to protect settlers from the Red Sticks and to supply military actions against them. Fort Armstrong, Hawaii was a Coast Artillery Fort built in 1907 and named after Brigadier General Samuel C. Armstrong. Army Corps of Engineers were still at the Fort until 1974. History Fort Armstrong is located at Honolulu, Oahu and was built on fill over Ku-akau-kukui reef in 1907 to protect Honolulu harbor. Fort Armstrong (Illinois)
Fort Armstrong (1816–1836), was one of a chain of western frontier defenses which the United States erected after the War of 1812. It was located at the foot of Rock Island, in the Mississippi River near the present-day Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. It was five miles from the principal Sac and Fox village on Rock River in Illinois. Of stone and timber construction, 300 feet square, the fort was begun in May 1816 and completed the following year. In 1832, the U.S. Army used the fort as a military headquarters during the Black Hawk War. It was normally garrisoned by two companies of United States Army regulars. With the pacification of the Indian threat in Illinois, the U.S. Government ceased operations at Fort Armstrong and the U.S. Army abandoned the frontier fort in 1836. Fort Armstrong Theatre
Fort Armstrong Theatre is a historic building located in downtown Rock Island, Illinois, United States. It opened in 1920 and it was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. In 2020 it was included as a contributing property in the Downtown Rock Island Historic District. It was commonly referred to as the Fort Theater. The theater was named for Fort Armstrong, a fortification that sat in the middle of the Mississippi River near the present location of the Rock Island Arsenal. History The Fort Armstrong Theatre opened on January 19, 1921. ''Midsummer Madness'', a silent movie by William C. deMille, played opening night.
