Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries is an American corporation that owns and operates a chain of cemeteries and mortuaries in Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties in Southern California. History The company was founded by a group of San Francisco businessmen in 1906. Hubert Eaton assumed management control in 1917 and is credited with being Forest Lawn's "founder" because of his origination of the "memorial-park" plan. The first location was in Tropico, which later became part of Glendale, California. Its facilities are officially known as ''memorial parks''. The parks are best known for the large number of celebrity burials, especially in the Glendale and Hollywood Hills locations. It is the original and current flagship location of Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries, a chain of six cemeteries and four additional mortuaries in Southern California. History Forest Lawn Memorial Park was founded in 1906 as a not-for-profit cemetery by a group of businessmen from San Francisco. Dr. Hubert Eaton and C.B. Forest Lawn-Long Beach is a 38-acre mortuary and memorial garden in Long Beach, California, United States. The gardens were established as Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in 1921 by Cecil E. Bryan, Sr., an entrepreneur whose family operated the facility for three generations. Sunnyside was one of the first major cemeteries in Long Beach. Over the years it served the local area, but fell into disrepair by the 1970s. and was purchased in 1978 by Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries. They renovated the facility, and renamed it Forest Lawn – Sunnyside in deference to its history—later changed to Forest Lawn – Long Beach to match their other properties. Background In 1935, Marguerite Stetter, of Bellevue, Kentucky purchased the old Tom Cody Estate on the Dixie Highway for use as a cemetery. In January 1937, the first burial took place at Forest Lawn. The absence of large grave markers and monuments made Forest Lawn unique in the 1930s. The cemetery was built as a "garden." Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens is a cemetery noted for the number of musicians' graves located within it. It was established in 1960, and is located at 1150 Dickerson Pike in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, just north of Nashville. One area of the cemetery is designated as "Music Row" for the number of country music entertainers that are interred there, including three musicians who died in the 1963 plane crash with Patsy Cline as well as singer Jack Anglin who died in a car accident on his way to her funeral. Previously it was the estate of John Carter and was known as Myrtle Grove Plantation.
