Foreshore, Cape Town
The Foreshore is an area in Cape Town, South Africa, situated between the historic city centre and the modern Port of Cape Town. It is built on land reclaimed from Table Bay in the 1930s and 1940s in connection with the construction of the Duncan Dock to replace the old harbour. Much of the Foreshore area is occupied by transport infrastructure for the port and Cape Town Railway Station. Other notable buildings in the area are the Cape Town Civic Centre, the Artscape Theatre Centre, and the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Bartolomeu Dias
Bartolomeu Dias ( 1450 – 29 May 1500) was a Portuguese mariner and explorer. In 1488, he became the first European navigator to round the southern tip of Africa and to demonstrate that the most effective southward route for ships lay in the open ocean, well to the west of the African coast. His discoveries effectively established the sea route between Europe and Asia. Early life Bartholomeu Dias was born around 1455. His family had a maritime background and one of his ancestors, Dinis Dias, explored the African coast in the 1440s and discovered the Cape Verde Peninsula in 1445. Little is known of his early life, and tracing his biography is complicated by the existence of several contemporary Portuguese seafarers with the same name. The South African Railways and Harbours Administration (SAR&H) was established on 31 May 1910 with formation of the Union of South Africa by the amalgamation of the four colonial railways and all harbours in South Africa - about 11,000 kilometres of track. Cape Town International Convention Centre
The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) is a convention centre in Cape Town, South Africa. The centre opened in June 2003. It is run as a partnership between the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government. Venues The centre takes up approximately on the city’s Foreshore and is within easy reach of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, major hotels and the rest of the city centre. Artscape Theatre Centre
Artscape Theatre Centre (formerly Nico Malan Theatre Centre) is the main performing arts centre in Cape Town, South Africa. It was opened in 1971 and is located on reclaimed land in the Foreshore area. The inaugural performance was scheduled to be Giuseppe Verdi's ''Aida'' but illness struck the title-role singer Emma Renzi and the production was replaced by CAPAB Ballet's '' Sylvia''. Other productions in the opening season were Mozart's ''Die Zauberflöte'' in Afrikaans and Giacomo Puccini's ''Madama Butterfly''. Cape Town Civic Centre
The Cape Town Civic Centre is a building on the Foreshore in central Cape Town, South Africa that serves as the headquarters of the City of Cape Town, the municipality that governs Cape Town and its suburbs. It was completed in 1978 by Concor, and is made up of two blocks. The Podium Block is a low-rise building which houses the City management, including the Council Chamber and the Mayor's Office. The Tower Block is a 98-metre-tall, 26-floor high-rise block that houses the administrative offices of the municipality; it is a long, narrow building that crosses Hertzog Boulevard, with the road passing underneath the central part of the building. The arch where the road passes under the building acts as a very powerful wind tunnel and some of the highest windspeeds can be found along this corridor. Table Bay
Table Bay (Afrikaans: ''Tafelbaai'') is a natural bay on the Atlantic Ocean overlooked by Cape Town (founded 1652 by Van Riebeeck) and is at the northern end of the Cape Peninsula, which stretches south to the Cape of Good Hope. It was named because it is dominated by the flat-topped Table Mountain. History Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to explore this region in 1486. The Port of Cape Town is the port of the city of Cape Town, South Africa. It is situated in Table Bay.
