The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin (known as Dahomey in 1960–75 and as the People's Republic of Benin in 1975–90) is a government minister in charge of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Benin, responsible for conducting foreign relations of the country. Republic Of Dahomey
The Republic of Dahomey (french: République du Dahomey; ), simply known as Dahomey, was established on 4 December 1958, as a self-governing colony within the French Community. Prior to attaining autonomy, it had been French Dahomey, part of the French Union. On 1 August 1960, it attained full independence from France. In 1975, the country was renamed Benin after the Bight of Benin (which was in turn named after the Benin Empire which had its seat of power in Benin City, modern-day Nigeria), since "Benin" was deemed politically neutral for all ethnic groups in the state, whereas "Dahomey" recalled the Fon-dominated Kingdom of Dahomey. Joseph Houessou Gnonlonfoun (born 1943) is a Beninese politician and diplomat. Gnonlonfoun was born in Porto Novo and was educated locally and abroad. He was an associate of Albert Tévoédjrè and chaired his political party Ensemble National. Gnonlonfoun was the vice-president of the Cotonou Court of First Instance between 1970 and 1970 and substitute member of the Superior Council of Magistracy in 1973. Between 1980 and 1982 he was a political prisoner in military camps. He was Secretary General of the Beninese Human Rights Commission (CBHD) from 1989 to 1991 and served in the National Assembly (Benin), National Assembly from 1991 to 1995. Antoine Idji Kolawolé (born 1946) is a Beninese politician. He was the minister of foreign affairs of Benin from 1998 to 2003 and the President of the National Assembly from 2003 to 2007. Political career Kolawolé was born in 1946 in Illikimou, near Kétou, Benin. Under President Mathieu Kérékou, Kolawolé served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from May 1998 to May 2003, when he resigned. Théodore Holo (born 15 April 1948) is a Beninese politician, academic, and judge. He was the foreign minister of Benin from 1991 to 1992. Born in Porto Novo and educated abroad, Holo taught at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration from 1979 to 1985.
