''The Beginning of the Enz'' is the fifth studio album from New Zealand rock group Split Enz. The album is a collection of non-album singles and demos that pre-date the band's first album, 1975's '' Mental Notes''. Three of these songs, "129", "Lovey Dovey" and "Spellbound", were later re-recorded and included on ''Mental Notes'' and '' Second Thoughts''. The album reached #35 in New Zealand, but did not chart in Australia. An unrelated compilation album, ''Beginning of the Enz'' (dropping "The" from the title), was released in the UK in 1980 by Chrysalis Records. Chrysalis Records
Chrysalis Records () is a British record label that was founded in 1968. The name is both a reference to the pupal stage of a butterfly and a combination of its founders' names, Chris Wright and Terry Ellis. It started as the Ellis-Wright Agency. Eddie Rayner
Anthony Edward Charles Rayner (born 19 November 1952) is a New Zealand musician who spent twelve years as a keyboardist in the band Split Enz. He has also played in the groups Orb, Space Waltz, Crowded House, The Makers, The Angels in 1986-1987 and 801. Rayner has released two solo albums. The first, ''Horse'', was an instrumental offering released in 1995, recorded entirely at Rayner's home studio in Melbourne, Australia. The second was entitled ''Play it Straight'', a play on a Philip Judd Split Enz song called ''Play it Strange'' that was a particular favourite of Rayner's during the mid- to late-1970s. The song was not released at the time, but was played live when Judd rejoined the band in 1977. Geoff Chunn
Geoff Chunn is a New Zealand musician, best known as an early member of Split Enz. Chunn was a teenage friend of Tim Finn. Together the two of them and Chunn's elder brother, Mike Chunn, founded the band Stillwater while at high school in the late 1960s. When Stillwater split up in 1971, Chunn joined acoustic group Rosewood.Dix (1988), p. 154. In late 1972, Mike Chunn was approached by Finn to join his new band, Split Ends, which he duly did. The following year, Geoff joined the band as drummer, staying with the band (called Split Enz from early 1974) until June 1974. Following his departure from Split Enz, Chunn briefly drummed for Dragon in 1974, before forming Citizen Band in 1977 with his brother Mike. Miles Golding
Miles Golding (born in Sydney in 1951) is a classical violinist, and an original member of Split Enz. Golding played on the band's first single "For You" in 1973, leaving them shortly after to pursue further training in London. Golding has played a variety of London in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Philomusica, the London Sinfonietta, Kent Opera, and the Orchestra of St John's Smith Square. Mike Chunn
Jonathan Michael Chunn (born 8 June 1952 in London) is a former member of the New Zealand bands Split Enz and Citizen Band. He performed alongside his brother Geoff Chunn in both bands. His musical performing career was cut short due to agoraphobia. Chunn spent eleven years as Director of New Zealand operations for the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), retiring from the role at the end of October 2003. He is currently CEO of Play It Strange Trust, which encourages children to try songwriting, and which he founded in April 2004. He has published several books, including the Split Enz biography ''Stranger Than Fiction''. In the 2002 Queen's Birthday and Golden Jubilee Honours, Chunn was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to music. Brian Timothy Finn (born 25 June 1952) is a New Zealand singer and musician. His musical career includes forming 1970s and 1980s New Zealand rock group Split Enz, a number of solo albums, temporary membership in his brother Neil's band Crowded House and joint efforts with Neil Finn as the Finn Brothers. Phil Judd
Philip Raymond Judd (born 20 March 1953) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter known for being one of the founders of the bands Split Enz and The Swingers. Split Enz In 1972, Judd and Tim Finn founded the arty folk band Split Enz. In its early days the band was known for its eccentric behaviour, wacky clothes, makeup and crazy hairstyles. In the early days the band members all adopted their middle names, with the exception of Phil Judd, the only member from that era to use his first name. Split Enz
Split Enz were a New Zealand rock band formed in Auckland in 1972 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd and had a variety of other members during its existence. Originally started as a folk-oriented group with quirky art rock stylings, the band built a strong regional following, noted for their outlandish costumes and makeup. ''Second Thoughts'' is the second studio album by New Zealand art rock band Split Enz. It was recorded in London with Roxy Music's guitarist Phil Manzanera producing the album. Four of the songs on the album were reworked versions of songs from their 1975 debut album, ''Mental Notes (Split Enz album), Mental Notes''. Two other songs on the album had been first recorded during the ''Mental Notes'' sessions, but left off and re-recorded for ''Second Thoughts''. There were two new songs, both written by Phil Judd, and a re-recording of an early Judd/Finn composition ("129"), which for the ''Second Thoughts'' version, was renamed "Matinee Idyll". Mental Notes (Split Enz Album)
''Mental Notes'' is the debut studio album by New Zealand band Split Enz. The album cover was painted by band member Phil Judd. Original vinyl copies featured Judd saying "Make a mental note" in the runout groove of the record's second side, causing the phrase to be looped ad infinitum on manual turntables until the stylus is removed. Recording Chunn later complained about the "totally unsympathetic treatment we'd had when we were recording in Australia. The engineer in Sydney thought we couldn't tune our guitars and that we were unprofessional and he just showed total disinterest right through." Much of the material derived from Tim Finn's and Phil Judd's fascination with the work of the renowned English writer and artist Mervyn Peake – notably "Spellbound" the epic track "Stranger Than Fiction" (their concert centrepiece) and "Titus", named after the hero of Peake's '' Gormenghast'' trilogy.
