For Pete's Sake!
''For Pete's Sake!'' is a 1934 ''Our Gang'' short comedy film directed by Gus Meins. It was the 127th (39th talking episode) ''Our Gang'' short that was released. Plot After Wally fills little Marianne's favorite doll with sawdust and gives it to her, neighborhood bully Leonard lassos it with a rope and swings it out in the street, where a passing truck crushes it. The gang then promises to purchase a new doll for the brokenhearted girl, as her big sister Jane comforts her. Unfortunately, the kids have no money; but it doesn't dampen their spirits. They window shop for a doll at the local toy store, where Leonard's equally obnoxious father, who coincidentally owns the store, agrees to give the kids a doll if they will trade their beloved Pete the Pup for it. Balking at this proposition, the kids concoct a variety of moneymaking schemes, all of them doomed to failure. Tearfully, the gang surrenders and trades Pete for the doll. Gus Meins
Gus Meins (March 6, 1893 – August 1, 1940), born Gustave Peter Ludwig Luley, was an American film director. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Career Meins started out in the 'teens as a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Evening Herald before becoming a comedy writer for Fox in 1919. In the 1920s, Meins directed a number of silent short subjects film series for Universal Pictures, including the '' Buster Brown'' comedies. He is best known as senior director of Hal Roach's ''Our Gang'' comedies from 1934 to 1936, and also as director of Laurel and Hardy's '' Babes in Toyland'' (1934). His assistant director was a young Gordon Douglas, who became senior director in 1936 when Meins left ''Our Gang'' for other directing jobs at Roach. Lyle Tayo (born Lyle Minnie Shipman; January 19, 1889 – May 2, 1971), aka Lyle Barton, was an American film actress who appeared in more than 50 films between 1921 and 1948, appearing in many short comedies at the Hal Roach Studios, several in support of Laurel and Hardy. Born in Elmdale, Kansas, she and her elder sister, Birleen (or Birdeen), were raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Leonard Kibrick (September 6, 1924 – January 4, 1993) was an American child actor. Career Kibrick was most notable for appearing in the '' Our Gang'' short subjects series from 1934 to 1936, usually portraying the villain. Kibrick first appeared in the 1934 Our Gang short '' For Pete's Sake''. He appeared in many more Our Gang shorts for the next two years. His final Our Gang short was the 1936 '' The Lucky Corner.''
