Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. Arminas Narbekovas
Arminas Narbekovas (born 28 January 1965 in Gargždai) is a former Lithuanian football player. In 2003, he was selected by UEFA as his country's Golden Player, the greatest player of the past 50 years. Personal life Arminas Narbekovas was born to a Tatar father Andrey Narbekov and a Lithuanian mother. Career Narbekovas made his debut in 1983 with Žalgiris Vilnius, Lithuania's sole representative in the Soviet Top League, at the age of 18. In 1987, he finished second in league scoring with 16 goals while leading his club to a third-place finish, their best in history. Zalgiris would then participate in the UEFA Cup for the first time, losing to Austria Vienna. Austria would become Narbekovas' destination after Lithuanian players were allowed to move abroad. Arminas moved there in 1990 after a short stint with Lokomotiv Moscow, since Lithuania was not a part of UEFA yet and players from its clubs were not permitted to transfer. Benjaminas Zelkevičius
Benjaminas Zelkevičius (born 6 February 1944) is a football coach and a former striker from Lithuania. He is currently the technical director at FM Ateitis. Zelkevičius has been manager of the Lithuania national football team on three separate occasions: from 1990–1991, 1995–1997, and 2001–2002. As player he had played 331 matches for the FK Žalgiris Vilnius (50 goals). He had coached also FK Žalgiris Vilnius and Russian football club FC Baltika Kaliningrad. During his playing career, he played for FC Shakhtar Donetsk in the Soviet Top League and for FK Žalgiris Vilnius in the Soviet First League. Post-managing career From September 2009 through 2010 Zelkevičius was coaching at FM Ateitis youth academy. On 12 August 2019, he became Ateitis' technical director. Igoris Pankratjevas
Igoris Pankratjevas (born 9 August 1964) is a Lithuanian professional football coach and a former player. He made his debut in the Soviet Top League in 1983 for FK Žalgiris Vilnius. Igoris Pankratjevas coached several top Lithuanian football clubs. In 2010 season he was voted best coach of the year after winning bronze medals with a promoted FK Žalgiris Vilnius side. Appointed Lithuania assistant coach in March 2012, before taking over as caretaker in September 2013 and then giving a permanent head coach role on 21 December 2013. He then resigned as Lithuania head coach after a 0–3 loss to England on 12 October 2015. Kęstutis Ruzgys (born 15 September 1962) is a retired Lithuanian football forward who played in Soviet Union, Baltic states, Yugoslavia and Germany during his professional career. Ruzgys was born in Klaipėda. He played with FK Žalgiris Vilnius in the Soviet First League in addition to OFK Beograd in the Yugoslav First League. He won a total of three caps for the Lithuania national team, scoring no goals, while playing in Serbia as a professional for OFK Beograd. Valdas Ivanauskas
Valdas Ivanauskas (born 31 July 1966) is a Lithuanian football coach and a former striker. He is best known in Europe for his time at Austria Vienna as well as Hamburger SV where he acted between 1993 and 97. Beyond that he stood on the sideline for Hearts football club from 2005–07. Club career Born in Kaunas, Ivanauskas started his playing career and soon became a regular with FK Žalgiris, a club that was a respected member of the old Soviet Premier Division. Ivanauskas spent the 1985 season in the Second Division with CSKA Moscow, but then he returned to Žalgiris. However, in season 1990, he played in the Second Division for Lokomotiv Moscow after Žalgiris decided to transfer to the new Lithuanian League. Arvydas Janonis (born 6 November 1960, in Kėdainiai) is a former Lithuanian footballer. Janonis played as a defender from 1978 until 1990 for FK Žalgiris Vilnius. 1987 Summer Universiade
The 1987 Summer Universiade, also known as the XIV Summer Universiade, took place in Zagreb, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia. It involved participants from 111 countries and over 6,000 individual sportspersons and members of teams. Infrastructural changes The city of Zagreb used the event to renovate and revitalize the city. The city's main square (Republic Square) was repaved with stone blocks and made part of the downtown pedestrian zone. A part of the Medveščak stream, which had been running under the sewers since 1898, was uncovered by workers. This part formed the Manduševac fountain that was also covered in 1898. Romas Mažeikis (born 28 April 1964) is a retired Lithuanian international footballer who played as a defender for clubs in the Soviet Union, Austria and Germany. Club career Born in Gargždai, Mažeikis began playing professional football for FK Žalgiris Vilnius in the Soviet First League. Žalgiris won the league in 1982, and he would spend the next seven seasons playing for the club appearing in 159 Soviet Top League matches. When Žalgiris left the Soviet league in 1990, he joined Georgian side FC Guria Lanchkhuti for the remainder of the season. Mažeikis returned to the Soviet Top League with FC Lokomotiv Moscow the following season, appearing in 24 matches as the club finished in last place.
