Football At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Football at the 1936 Summer Olympics was won by Italy. After the introduction of the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 (which had, in itself led to the absence of a football tournament from the 1932 Games programme), competing nations would from now on only be permitted to play their best players if those players were amateur or (where national associations were assisted by interested states to traverse such a rule) where professional players were state-sponsored. However, since amateur players were counted as senior squad players, their results would be still counted as senior side's results until 1992. Annibale Frossi
Annibale Frossi (; 6 July 1911 – 26 February 1999) was an Italian football manager and player, who played as a forward. Frossi is perhaps best known for wearing correctional glasses during his playing years after suffering from myopia from when he was a child. As a footballer, he was a member of the Italy national team, which won the gold medal in the football tournament at the 1936 Summer Olympics, finishing the tournament as top-scorer. As a manager, he is also known for his developments of the theory of catenaccio, which emphasises a defensive style of football. Club career Born in Muzzana del Turgnano, Frossi began his career as a professional footballer with Udinese, and, after a long stay in Serie B (with Padova, Bari, and L’Aquila), he was acquired by Ambrosiana Inter, where he made his debut on 21 June 1936, in Mitropa Cup. Alfredo Foni
Alfredo Foni (; 20 January 1911 – 28 January 1985) was an Italian footballer in the 1930s and later on a coach, who played as a defender. He is one of only four players to have won both an Olympic gold medal and the FIFA World Cup with the Italy national football team. Club career Foni was born in Udine, and he made his professional debut with local club Udinese at the age of 16, in 1927, in the Prima Divisione (the predecessor to the Italian Serie A); he later moved to Lazio in 1929. He later moved to Padova for a brief stint after a few seasons in Roma. Foni later transferred to Juventus in 1934, replacing Virginio Rosetta. Along with teammate Pietro Rava at the Turin club, he formed one of the best defensive partnerships in Italy, and in the world, as they went on to win the 1936 Summer Olympics and 1938 FIFA World Cup with Italy, as well as the 1935 League title with Juventus, as well as two Coppa Italia titles in 1938 and 1942. Alfonso Negro
Alfonso Negro (; 5 July 1915 – 7 November 1984) was an American-born Italian football (soccer) player, who played as a forward; he is believed to be the first American-born player in Serie A and the first American-born player to have played for Italy. Club career Born in Brooklyn, New York, Negro started his career with Angri in Serie C at the age of 15. He moved onward to Catanzarese in Serie B. While at Catanzarese, he made his international debut with Italy B team against Hungary in Vercelli. In 1934, he transferred to Fiorentina in Serie A. Sergio Bertoni
Sergio Bertoni (; 23 September 1915 – 15 February 1995) was an Italian association football manager and player, who played as a striker. With the Italy national team, he won the 1936 Summer Olympics football tournament and the 1938 FIFA World Cup. Club career Born in Pisa, Bertoni played for Pisa Calcio (1935–1938) and Genoa C.F.C. Giulio Cappelli
Giulio Cappelli (; 4 March 1911 – 16 December 1995) was an Italian footballer who played as a forward. He competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics with the Italy national football team, winning a gold medal in the tournament. Club career Born in La Spezia, Cappelli began his football career with local side Spezia. He joined Serie A side Livorno for two seasons beginning in 1933. The next season, he transferred to Serie B club F.C. Esperia Viareggio. Cappelli returned to Serie A with S.S.D. Sporting Lucchese and finished his playing career with Spezia. Ugo Locatelli
Ugo Locatelli (; 5 February 1916 – 28 May 1993) was an Italian international footballer who played as a midfielder or as a forward. Regarded as one of Italy's greatest players, he won a gold medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics and a winner's medal at the 1938 FIFA World Cup while playing with the Italy national football team, and is only one of four Italian players to have managed this achievement. Club career Locatelli was born in Toscolano-Maderno, near Brescia, Lombardy. At club level, he had a successful career, winning the Scudetto twice with Internazionale, in 1938 and 1940. He first played for Brescia between 1933 and 1936, aside from a brief loan to Atalanta, before transferring over to Inter, which was known as Ambrosiana Inter Milan at the time, where he remained until 1941.
