Food Allergy Initiative
The Food Allergy Initiative (FAI) was a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1998 with the mission to fund food allergy research that seeks a cure, to improve diagnosis and treatment, and to keep patients safe through advocacy and education. It was the largest private source of funding for food allergy research in the United States. As of 2011, the organization had raised more than $72 million towards these goals. In 2012, FAI and the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network merged to form Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE). Food Allergy
A food allergy is an abnormal immune response to food. The symptoms of the allergic reaction may range from mild to severe. They may include itchiness, swelling of the tongue, vomiting, diarrhea, hives, trouble breathing, or low blood pressure. This typically occurs within minutes to several hours of exposure. When the symptoms are severe, it is known as anaphylaxis. A food intolerance and food poisoning are separate conditions, not due to an immune response. Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to food allergy awareness, research, education, and advocacy. The organization provides information, programs, and resources about food allergies and anaphylaxis, a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
