Fondren Mitchell
Fondren Lack Mitchell (June 19, 1921 – September 24, 1952) was an American football halfback who played one season with the Miami Seahawks of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC). He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL) in the tenth round of the 1943 NFL Draft. He played college football at Florida. Early years Mitchell won six individual state prep titles in track and field at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida. He won the shot put state title in 1937, 1938 and 1939, the discus state title in 1937 and 1938 and the long jump state title in 1939. College career Mitchell lettered for the Florida Gators of the University of Florida from 1940 to 1942. Ella Florence Fondren (née Cockrum; June 1, 1880 – May 3, 1982) was a philanthropist to hospitals and institutions of higher learning. Early life Ella Florence Fondren was born on June 1, 1880, to Allen Cathy and Mary (Pogue) Cochrum in Hazel, Kentucky. She grew up in Corsicana, Texas. After the death of her father in 1895, she left school to care for the family and work in their boardinghouse. On February 14, 1904, she married Walter W. Fondren, an oil worker. Philanthropy Walter Fondren worked in oil fields along the Gulf corridor in Texas, but focused his attention on the Humble fields while co-founding the Humble Oil Company. The couple worked together in philanthropy until his death in 1939. Walter William Fondren III (April 29, 1936 – January 28, 2010) was an all-conference football player and conservation activist. He played halfback, quarterback and punter for the Texas Longhorns from 1955 to 1957 and was the first starting quarterback for Darrell Royal. He was later a founding member of the Coastal Conservation Association. Early life Fondren was the son of Doris Ledwidge and Walter William Fondren, Jr. and grandson of Humble Oil co-founder Walter William Fondren, Sr. He grew up with his three sisters in Houston, Texas and became a star athlete in high school.
