Christy Moore
Christopher Andrew "Christy" Moore (born 7 May 1945) is an Irish folk singer, songwriter and guitarist. In addition to his significant success as an individual, he is one of the founding members of Planxty and Moving Hearts. His first album, ''Paddy'' ''on the Road'' was recorded with Dominic Behan in 1969. In 2007, he was named as Ireland's greatest living musician in RTÉ's People of the Year Awards. Early life Moore was born in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland and attended Newbridge College. His mother Nancy Moore was a Fine Gael election candidate. He was originally a bank employee who wanted to express himself using traditional music. During a bank strike in 1966, which lasted twelve weeks, he went to England, as many striking officials did, but didn't return when the strike was settled. Traditional Music
Folk music is a music genre that includes traditional folk music and the contemporary genre that evolved from the former during the 20th-century folk revival. Declan Sinnott
Declan Sinnott (born 29 July 1950) is an Irish musician and record producer. Originally from Wexford town, where his father was an optician and jeweller on Main Street, he came to Dublin in the late 1960s. Around 1970 he was a member of the poetry-and-music group Tara Telephone, in which he composed, sang, and played guitar. He and poet/percussionist Eamon Carr left Tara Telephone to form the Celtic Rock band Horslips, which Sinnott left in 1972, before the recording of Horslips' first album in 1973. He married Kathy Sinnott (née Kelly) when he was twenty two. They had nine children together, but are now separated. One of their children, Kevin Sinnott accidentally drowned while swimming at university in Georgia, US on 21 September 2009. In the 1980s, he was a member of Moving Hearts. The album features a number of new compositions as well as re-recordings of past songs. Reception ''The Irish Times'' found the album "a statement of continued intent as well as a towering achievement" that provided a successful overview of Moore's work for both new and long-time listeners. The Guardian deemed it "both entertainment and history lesson", and "a still unique mix of politics, humour and lyricism". For the ABC it was "a fine way to revisit his work", and for '' No Depression'' it was a "wonderful collection of music from a true legend both inside and outside folk music". Paula Meehan
Paula Meehan (born 1955) is an Irish poet and playwright. Life and work Paula Meehan was born in Dublin in 1955, the eldest of six children. She subsequently moved to London with her parents where she attended St. Elizabeth's Primary School in Kingston upon Thames. She then returned to Dublin with her family where she attended a number of primary schools finishing her primary education at the Central Model Girls' School in Gardiner Street. She began her secondary education at St. Michael's Holy Faith Covent in Finglas but was expelled for organising a protest march against the regime of the school. She studied for her Intermediate Certificate on her own and then went to Whitehall House Senior College, a vocational school, to study for her Leaving Certificate. Nigel Rolfe
Nigel Rolfe (born 1950) is an English-born performance artist and video artist based in Ireland. He is a member of Aosdána, an elite association of Irish artists. Biography Rolfe was born on the Isle of Wight in 1950. He studied at the Farnham School of Art and Bath Academy of Art. Career Rolfe moved to Ireland in 1974, working at the Project Arts Centre. In the late 1970s, Rolfe became active in performance art. According to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, his work "encompasses installation, drawing, photography, video and audio media, and examines the influence of history on the individual and society." In the 1980s–90s he worked with the group Black Market International. In the 1980s, his work was mostly in reference to The Troubles. John Spillane (born 1961) is a singer-songwriter from Cork, Ireland. Background Spillane grew up in the Cork suburb of Wilton, in a family of five boys. Raised by his mother, she influenced his musical nature and taught him a variety of Cork songs including "The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee" and "The Lonely Woods of Upton". A shy child who shunned the spotlight, he got his first guitar at the age of fifteen and joined his first band in school. When he first began his main influences derived from artists like the Beatles, Neil Young, Planxty and Bob Dylan. His beginnings were more rock than anything else until he had a change of heart.
