Flávia Piovesan
Flávia Piovesan (born c.1968) is a Brazilian lawyer and human rights Commissioner. She was elected by the Organization of American States (OAS) to serve from 2018 to 2021 as a Commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). In 2021 she was the 2nd vice-president of the IACHR as part of the first all woman team of President and vice-presidents. Life Piovesan took a master's degree and a PhD at the Catholic University of São Paulo. She conducted long term human rights research at Harvard Law School, Oxford University and the Max Planck Institute after she gained her doctorate. She was the Humboldt Foundation Georg Forster Research Fellow from 2009 to 2014 at the Max Planck Institute. In 1991 she became a professor of Constitutional Law and Humans Rights at the Catholic University of São Paulo. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (the IACHR or, in the three other official languages Spanish, French, and Portuguese CIDH, ''Comisión Interamericana de los Derechos Humanos'', ''Commission Interaméricaine des Droits de l'Homme'', ''Comissão Interamericana de Direitos Humanos'') is an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (OAS). The separate Inter-American Court of Human Rights is an autonomous judicial institution based in the city of San José, Costa Rica. Together the Court and the Commission make up the human rights protection system of the OAS.
