Flying Scholarships For The Disabled
Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP) is a UK charity based at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, dedicated to helping disabled people to learn to fly a light aircraft. The stated purpose is to inspire disabled adults, building their confidence, self-esteem and aspirations through the sharing of life changing aviation experiences. The charity was founded in 1983 by Tim Prince and Paul Bowen of the Royal International Air Tattoo in the memory of Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, the disabled wartime fighter ace who lost both his legs in an accident in 1931. Over 400 disabled people have participated in the scholarship scheme, several are paraplegic, and others are disabled as a result, for example, of cerebral palsy, loss of limbs, rheumatoid arthritis, MS, ME, spina bifida and poliomyelitis. RAF Fairford
Royal Air Force Fairford or more simply RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force (RAF) station in Gloucestershire, England which is currently a standby airfield and therefore not in everyday use. Its most prominent use in recent years has been as an airfield for United States Air Force B-52s during the 2003 Iraq War, Operation Allied Force in 1999, and the first Gulf War in 1991. It is the US Air Force's only European airfield for heavy bombers. RAF Fairford was the only TransOceanic Abort Landing site for NASA's Space Shuttle in the UK. As well as having a sufficiently long runway for a shuttle landing (the runway is long), it also had NASA-trained fire and medical crews stationed on the airfield. The runway is rated with an unrestricted load-bearing capacity, meaning that it can support any aircraft with any type of load. Timothy Prince
Timothy George Alexander (Tim) Prince OBE FRAeS (born 1949) is one of the founder members of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), the world's largest military airshow. Tim Prince worked for the DoT then the CAA as an Air Traffic Controller from 1966 to 1978. He was one of the team that staged the first Air Tattoo, at North Weald Airfield in 1971. He stood down from his position of Chief Executive of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises and the Royal International Air Tattoo in August 2014. Tim was a founder member and Trustee of the Royal International Air Tattoo Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP and formerly Flying Scholarships for the Disabled) which was established by the Air Tattoo team in 1983 in memory of Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader who had been its President since 1976 until his passing in 1982. Royal International Air Tattoo
The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) is the world's largest military air show, held annually in July, usually at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, England in support of The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust. The show typically attracts a total of 150,000 to 200,000 spectators over the weekend. History The first Air Tattoo was staged at North Weald Airfield in Essex in 1971, with just over 100 aircraft taking part. Douglas Bader
Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, (; 21 February 1910 – 5 September 1982) was a Royal Air Force flying ace during the Second World War. He was credited with 22 aerial victories, four shared victories, six probables, one shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. Bader joined the RAF in 1928, and was commissioned in 1930. In December 1931, while attempting some aerobatics, he crashed and lost both his legs. Having been on the brink of death, he recovered, retook flight training, passed his check flights and then requested reactivation as a pilot. Although there were no regulations applicable to his situation, he was retired against his will on medical grounds. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, however, Douglas Bader returned to the RAF and was accepted as a pilot. Hussein bin Talal ( ar, الحسين بن طلال, ''Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṭalāl''; 14 November 1935 – 7 February 1999) was King of Jordan from 11 August 1952 until his death in 1999. As a member of the Hashemite dynasty, the royal family of Jordan since 1921, Hussein was a 40th-generation direct descendant of Muhammad. Paul Bruce Dickinson (born 7 August 1958) is an English singer who has been the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden from 1981 to 1993 and 1999–present. Polly Vacher
Polly Vacher (born 1944) is an English aviator specialising in long-distance solo flights. She was awarded the MBE for services to charity in 2002. She lives in Oxfordshire. Born in south Devon, she trained in physiotherapy and spent twenty years in music education. Her interest in aviation developed from a charity skydiving event. She obtained her private pilot licence with her husband Peter in Australia in 1994 and they followed this up by a circumnavigation of the continent. In 1997 she toured the United States by plane, flying solo across the North Atlantic in both directions. Andy Lewis (triathlete)
Andrew James Lewis (born 24 January 1983) is a retired British paratriathlete. Lewis is one of Britain's most successful PT2 paratriathletes, winning gold medals at European, world and Paralympic levels. Background As a youngster, Lewis competed for Gloucestershire as a cross-country runner. At the age of 16 he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which eventually resulted in a through the knee amputation in his right leg when he was 22. Career Lewis took up paratriathlon in 2013, competing in the men's PT2 category from 2014. In August 2014 he won the British Paratriathlon National Championships. His first major title came in May 2016, when he finished in first place at the ETU Triathlon European Championships, in Lisbon. In July of the same year he took the gold medal at the Paratriathlon World Championships in Rotterdam, before also going on to take gold at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.
