Floyd Volker
Floyd W. Volker (June 21, 1921 – January 5, 1995) was an American basketball player. He played professionally in the National Basketball League (NBL), the National Professional Basketball League (NPBL), and in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the early days of professional basketball. Volker, a 6'4 forward from Casper High School in Casper, Wyoming, went on to play collegiately at the University of Wyoming. He was a starting forward on the Cowboys' 1943 national championship team as a junior. After a pause in his career to serve in the US military during World War II, Volker returned to campus for his senior year in 1946–47. After his college playing days, Volker signed with the Oshkosh All-Stars of the NBL in 1947. In 1949, when the NBL and the Basketball Association of America merged to form the NBA, the All-Stars were disbanded and Volker was assigned to the Indianapolis Olympians for the inaugural season of the NBA. In the sport of basketball, there are five players play per team, each assigned to positions. Historically, these players have been assigned, to positions defined by the role they play on the court, from a strategic point of view. The three main positions are guard, forward, and center, with the standard team featuring two guards, two forwards, and a center. Over time, as more specialized roles developed, each of the guards and forwards came to be differentiated, and today each of the five positions are known by unique names, each of which has also been assigned a number: point guard (PG) or 1, the shooting guard (SG) or 2, the small forward (SF) or 3, the power forward (PF) or 4, and the center (C) or 5. The Denver Nuggets are an American professional basketball team based in Denver.
