Flower Hill, Texas
Flower Hill is a ghost town in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Founded by emancipated slaves, the town is one of 13 known " Freedom Colonies," in the county. In the 1940s, a church, a cemetery and several houses marked the town on county highway maps. By the 1980s, only the cemetery remained. Geography It is located three miles southeast of Smithville, 19 miles southeast of the town of Bastrop and 49 miles southeast of Austin. Education In 1907, Flower Hill had a one-teacher school for fifty-four black students. Smithville Independent School District is a public school district based in Smithville, Texas (USA). Located in Bastrop County, in which it serves Smithville and Rosanky, a small portion of the district extends into Fayette County. In 2009, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Smithville ISD is in the service area of Austin Community College. Bastrop, Texas
Bastrop () is a city and the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,688 according to the 2020 census. It is located about southeast of Austin and is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. History Spanish soldiers lived temporarily at the current site of Bastrop as early as 1804, when a fort was established where the Old San Antonio Road crossed the Colorado River and named ''Puesta del Colorado''. Bastrop's namesake, Felipe Enrique Neri, Baron de Bastrop, was a commoner named Philip Hendrik Nering Bogel, who was wanted for embezzlement in his native country of the Netherlands. Smithville is a city in Bastrop County, Texas, Bastrop County, Texas, United States, near the Colorado River (Texas), Colorado River. The population was 3,922 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History Thomas Jefferson Gazley arrived in 1827 and set the pace of development for Smithville by building the first house and establishing the first store, which served incoming settlers. He later served in the Mexican government and helped write the Texas Declaration of Independence and the first Constitution, and became a true Texas hero. Freedmen's Town
In the United States, a freedmen's town was an African American municipality or community built by freedmen, former slaves who were emancipated during and after the American Civil War. These towns emerged in a number of states, most notably Texas. They are also known as freedom colonies, from the title of a book by Sitton and Conrad. History The Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment brought 4 million people out of slavery in the defunct Confederate States of America plus the four "border" slave states that did not secede. Many freed people were faced with the questions of where they would go, what they would eat and how they would survive. Many decided to remain on plantations working as sharecroppers. The Emancipation Proclamation, officially Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the Civil War. The Proclamation changed the legal status of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the secessionist Confederate states from enslaved to free. As soon as slaves escaped the control of their enslavers, either by fleeing to Union lines or through the advance of federal troops, they were permanently free.
