State Road 345 (SR 345) is a north–south route in the Big Bend area of Florida, running from U.S. Route 27 Alternate (US 27 Alt.) east of Chiefland to County Road 332 (CR 332) southwest of Chiefland. South of CR 332, the road becomes County Road 345 as it runs towards Rosewood. Another piece of CR 345 begins at US 27 Alt. about east of the north end of SR 345 and runs north to the curve on SR 49. A third section goes east from a point about north on SR 49 to CR 339. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a decentralized agency charged with the establishment, maintenance, and regulation of public transportation in the state of Florida. Chiefland is a city in Levy County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,316 at the 2020 census. Chiefland calls itself the "Gem of the Suwannee Valley" and was incorporated in 1929. History A village of the Timucua people was once located south of the present city and at Manatee Springs. The area's economy is traditionally based on agriculture, primarily farming (peanuts, watermelons, hay); ranching (cattle, hogs); dairy (milk); timber (pulpwood, lumber, turpentine) and aquaculture (fishing, oystering, crabbing). In July 1927, a Black man named Albert Williams was murdered by a mob. He had allegedly assaulted a white turpentine operator over a debt he owed the white man, and "was shot to death by a mob". Attractions Manatee Springs State Park is located west of town; the crystal-clear water is a "first-magnitude" spring that flows directly into the Suwannee River. Levy County, Florida
Levy County is a county located on the Gulf coast and in the northern part of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 42,915. Its county seat is Bronson. History Levy County was created in 1845, after the Seminole Wars. It was named for David Levy Yulee, a planter elected in 1841 as the state's territorial delegate to the US House of Representatives, where he served two terms. Rosewood, Florida
Rosewood is an unincorporated community in Levy County, Florida, located just off State Road 24 approximately northeast of Sumner and northeast of Cedar Key. An African-American community prospered there in the early 20th century, until a white mob destroyed it in the 1923 Rosewood massacre. History Settlement The initial settlers of Rosewood were both Black and White. When most of the cedar trees in the area had been cut by 1890, the pencil mills closed, and many White residents moved to Sumner. By 1900, the population in Rosewood had become predominantly Black. State Road 49 (SR 49) is the state designation for US 19/ 98/ 27 Alternate( SR 55) in Chiefland, and US 27( SR 20) in Hildreth east of Branford, Florida. It also includes a county extension in Suwannee County, Florida from Hildreth to the outskirts of Live Oak, Florida. Route description State Road 49 begins just northwest of the southeastern terminus of the US 19- 98- 27 ALT concurrency in Chiefland. The road is concurrent with US 129, running northeast until it reaches Northwest 30th Avenue and turns straight north where it remains through the rest of Levy County. Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge
The Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge (LSNWR) is part of the United States National Wildlife Refuge System. It is located in southeastern Dixie and northwestern Levy counties on the western coast of Florida, approximately fifty miles southwest of the city of Gainesville. The wildlife refuge was established in 1979 to protect one of the largest undeveloped river delta systems in the United States. It includes of the Suwannee River estuary and of coastline.
