Florence Eldridge
Florence Eldridge (born Florence McKechnie, September 5, 1901 – August 1, 1988) was an American actress. She was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in 1957 for her performance in '' Long Day's Journey into Night''. Early years Eldridge was born Florence McKechnie in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Charles J. McKechnie. She attended public schools, including P.S. 85 and Girls' High School. Stage Eldridge made her Broadway debut at age 17 as a chorus member of ''Rock-a-Bye Baby'' at the Astor Theatre. The reference book ''American Theatre: A Chronicle of Comedy and Drama, 1930-1969'' noted, "In the 1920s she won major attention in such plays as ''The Cat and the Canary'' and ''Six Characters in Search of an Author''." In 1965, husband Fredric March and she did a world tour under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. ''An Enemy of the People'' (original Norwegian title: ''En folkefiende''), an 1882 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen, followed his previous play, ''Ghosts'', which criticized the hypocrisy of his society's moral code. That response included accusations of both ''Ghosts'' and its author being "scandalous," "degenerate," and "immoral." In ''An Enemy of the People'', a man dares to expose an unpalatable truth publicly and is punished for it. ''The Story of Temple Drake'' is a 1933 American pre-Code drama film directed by Stephen Roberts and starring Miriam Hopkins and Jack La Rue. It tells the story of Temple Drake, a reckless woman in the American South who falls into the hands of a brutal gangster and rapist. It was adapted from the highly controversial 1931 novel ''Sanctuary'' by William Faulkner. Though some of the more salacious elements of the source novel were not included, the film was still considered so indecent that it helped give rise to the strict enforcement of the Hays Code.
