Florence Apartment House
The Florence Apartment House (later called the Florence Apartments, the Florence, and Hotel Florence) was an apartment building in New York City on the northeast corner of List of numbered streets in Manhattan#17th to 19th Streets, East 18th Street and Fourth Avenue (later known as East Union Place and today as Park Avenue, Park Avenue South). The seven-story, 42-unit building was built in 1878 by Virginia Leedy Matthews, née Brander, for some $500,000 ($ today), mostly financed by a $400,000 Balloon payment mortgage, balloon loan from The Bank for Savings in the City of New-York. Matthews was the wife of Edward Matthews, "a real estate entrepreneur who at one time controlled more property from Wall Street south than anyone else." It was designed by a Belgian emigrant, Emile Gruwé, and built by the firm of White and McEvoy. List Of Numbered Streets In Manhattan
The New York City Borough (New York City), borough of Manhattan contains 214 numbered east–west streets ranging from 1st to 228th, the majority of them designated in the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. These streets do not run exactly east–west, because the grid plan is aligned with the Hudson River, rather than with the cardinal directions. Thus, the majority of the Manhattan grid's "west" is approximately 29 degrees north of true west; the angle differs above 155th Street, where the grid initially ended. The grid now covers the length of the island from 14th Street (Manhattan), 14th Street north. All numbered streets carry an East or West prefix – for example, East 10th Street or West 10th Street – which is demarcated at Broadway (Manhattan), Broadway below 8th Street (Manhattan), 8th Street, and at Fifth Avenue at 8th Street and above.
