Flora Steiger-Crawford
Flora Steiger-Crawford (1 September 1899, Bombay – 31 July 1991, Zurich) was a Swiss architect and sculptor. In 1923, she became the first woman to graduate in architecture from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich where she studied under Karl Coelestin Moser. After working with Pfleghard & Haefeli in Zurich, she married Rudolf Steiger in 1924 and established her own firm with him in Riehen, moving to Zurich the following year. Their first project, the Sandreuter House in Riehen (1924), is considered to be the first Modernist house in Switzerland. Steiger-Crawford went on to design individual houses while developing modern furniture, including a stackable metal chair for the Zett House in Zurich (1932). In 1930, she turned to sculpture, terminating her architectural activities in 1938. From 1938, she was a member of the Swiss Association of Female Artists and Sculptors. Riehen
Riehen (Swiss German: ''Rieche'') is a municipality in the canton of Basel-Stadt in Switzerland. Together with the city of Basel and Bettingen, Riehen is one of three municipalities in the canton. Riehen hosts the Fondation Beyeler (a privately owned art gallery) as well as a toy museum and several parks. Riehen was the first municipality in Switzerland to elect a woman, Trudy Späth-Schweizer to political office, in 1958. Modern architecture, or modernist architecture, was an architectural movement or architectural style based upon new and innovative technologies of construction, particularly the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete; the idea that form should follow function ( functionalism); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament. It emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World War II until the 1980s, when it was gradually replaced as the principal style for institutional and corporate buildings by postmodern architecture. Women In Architecture
Women in architecture have been documented for many centuries, as professional (or amateur) practitioners, educators and clients. Since architecture became organized as a profession in 1857, the number of women in architecture has been low. At the end of the 19th century, starting in Finland, certain schools of architecture in Europe began to admit women to their programmes of study. In 1980 M. Rosaria Piomelli, born in Italy, became the first woman to hold a deanship of any school of architecture in the United States, as Dean of the City College of New York School of Architecture. However, only in recent years have women begun to achieve wider recognition with several outstanding participants including five Pritzker prizewinners since the turn of the millennium.
