Fleming Companies
Fleming Companies was founded as Lux Mercantile in Topeka, Kansas, in 1915 by O. A. Fleming, Gene Wilson and Samuel Lux. In 1921 the company's name was changed to Fleming-Wilson, and in 1941, the company name was changed to The Fleming Company, and Ned Fleming, son of O.A., was named president, chairman, and CEO. The company's IPO occurred in 1959, when 100,000 shares were offered. In 1981, R.D. Harrsion was elected Chairman and CEO of the company, with Dean Werries serving as President and COO. Starting in the 1960s, Fleming Companies began acquiring numerous grocery wholesalers and retailers, and it grew to become the nation's largest supplier of consumer packaged goods to U.S. retailers, serving approximately 50,000 retail locations. Topeka ( ; Kansa: ; iow, Dópikˀe, script=Latn or ) is the capital city of the U.S. state of Kansas and the seat of Shawnee County. It is along the Kansas River in the central part of Shawnee County, in northeast Kansas, in the Central United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 126,587. Core-Mark Holding Company distributes fresh, chilled and frozen merchandise mainly to convenience stores in the United States. It also provides associated business services such as category management and management of promotions. History Core-Mark was started in San Francisco in 1888 by the Glaser brothers. After multi-generational ownership, the Glaser family sold the company to David Gillespie in 1974, who took the company public by listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange with Gerald Pickman COO and Jerry Goldman CFO in 1984. Roy Furr
Roy Furr (1907 — June 13, 1975) was the president of the Furr's chain of supermarkets and restaurants after his older brother Key Furr. Early life and education Furr was born in McKinney, Texas. As a boy he worked for his father C.W. Furr and brother Key Furr at the Kirkland Mercantile Company in Kirkland in Childress County, Texas. He studied at Clarendon College in Clarendon, Texas, and the University of Oklahoma at Norman. He taught school until 1923, when he rejoined his father and older brother Key Furr in Amarillo to launch the Furr Food Stores. SuperValu (United States)
SuperValu, Inc. was an American wholesaler and retailer of grocery products. The company, formerly headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, had been in business since 1926. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Natural Foods (UNFI). On July 26, 2018, SuperValu announced that it had agreed to be purchased by Providence, RI-based United Natural Foods Inc., the largest distributor to Whole Foods Market and other natural foods stores. UNFI would pay $1.3 billion in cash and assume another $1.6 billion in SuperValu debt and liabilities. UNFI said it expects the deal to result in roughly $175 million in savings over three years and that it would divest itself of SuperValu's grocery stores.
