Flax Art Supply Stores
Flax is the surname behind a group of art supply stores spread across the United States. As of August 2018, Flax family owned and operated specialty retail stores are located in San Francisco, Oakland, Atlanta, Orlando, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The Flax businesses were founded between 1919 and 1946 by four Flax brothers, with locations in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. The business entities have always been independent of each other, yet through common branding they have represented a coast-to-coast Flax Art Supply presence. Beginnings In 1903, Meyer Flax arrived in New York on the SS Pennsylvania from a small farming community in Russia. The eldest in a family of six children with four boys and two girls, Meyer earned enough over the next two years to send tickets back home for his siblings and parents so they could join him in America. SS Pennsylvania (1896)
SS ''Pennsylvania'' was a transatlantic liner that was launched in Ireland in 1896 and spent most of her career with Hamburg America Line (HAPAG). She was the first of a class of four HAPAG sister ships that were built in the United Kingdom and Germany between 1896 and 1899. In 1917 the US Government seized ''Pennsylvania'' and renamed her ''Nansemond''. She was a troop ship with the Army Transport Service until the end of the First World War. In 1919 the US Navy operated her as the troop ship USS ''Nansemond'' (ID-1395). In August 1919 the Navy returned ''Nansemond'' to the United States Shipping Board, who had her converted to a cargo-only ship. She was scrapped in 1924. Fort Mason
Fort Mason, in San Francisco, California originated as a coastal defense site during the American Civil War. The nucleus of the property was owned by John C. Frémont and disputes over compensation by the United States continued into 1968. In 1882 the defenses were named for Richard Barnes Mason, a military governor before statehood. Fort Mason became the headquarters for an Army command that included California and the Hawaiian Islands from 1904 to 1907. In 1912 the Army began building a port facility with piers and warehouses to be a home base for ships of the Army Transport Service serving Alaska, Hawaii, the Philippines and other Pacific Army posts and focus of Army supply for the Pacific.
