Flags And Waves
''Flags and Waves'' is a short computer animation test clip which was created by animator Bill Reeves and Alain Fournier for Pixar sometime in 1986. 2009 Vintage Books edition: , p. 91Excerpt availableat Google Books. The clip included waves reflecting a sunset and lapping against the shore. Reeves and Fournier made the project with the feedback of John Lasseter to work out details of rendering water and waves realistically, including lighting, motion, and shading. It was first exhibited at SIGGRAPH in Dallas in August 1986, along with Lasseter’s landmark computer animated short '' Luxo Jr.'' and another test project '' Beach Chair'', by Eben Ostby. The methods developed during the creation of this project were the basis of the water in '' Finding Nemo''. It is based on an oceanographic model of ocean waves which Fournier dug out of the literature from the nineteenth century. William Reeves (animator)
William "Bill" Reeves (born May 5, 1959) is a Canadian animator and technical director known for working with John Lasseter on the animated shorts '' Luxo Jr.'' and '' The Adventures of André and Wally B.'' After obtaining a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo and completing a Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, Reeves was hired by George Lucas as a member of Lucasfilm's Computer Division, Computer Graphics Group. He was one of the founding employees of Pixar when it was sold in 1986 to Steve Jobs. Reeves is the inventor of the first motion blur algorithm and methods to simulate particle motion in CGI. Finding Nemo
''Finding Nemo'' is a 2003 American computer-animated comedy-drama adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Andrew Stanton with co-direction by Lee Unkrich, the screenplay was written by Stanton, Bob Peterson, and David Reynolds from a story by Stanton. The film stars the voices of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould, Willem Dafoe, and Geoffrey Rush. It tells the story of an overprotective clownfish named Marlin who, along with a regal blue tang named Dory, searches for his missing son Nemo. SMPTE Color Bars
SMPTE color bars are a television test pattern used where the NTSC video standard is utilized, including countries in North America. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) refers to the pattern as Engineering Guideline (EG) 1-1990. Its components are a known standard, and created by test pattern generators. Comparing it as received to the known standard gives video engineers an indication of how an NTSC video signal has been altered by recording or transmission and what adjustments must be made to bring it back to specification. It is also used for setting a television monitor or receiver to reproduce NTSC chrominance and luminance information correctly. A precursor to the SMPTE test pattern was conceived by Norbert D. Eben Fiske Ostby
Eben Fiske Ostby (born February 24, 1955) is a pioneer computer graphics software developer, animator, and technical director for motion pictures. Ostby was born in Hampton, Connecticut, United States. He graduated from Pomfret School and Vassar College, where he was its "first computer science major". He joined Pixar when the company was a garage start-up, as one of the first four employees of its animation department along with John Lasseter. There, he worked on early breakthrough animation shorts such as '' Luxo Jr.'', ''Red's Dream'', ''Tin Toy'', ''Knick Knack'', and '' For the Birds''. He became Vice President for Software.
