At present there is no official flag for the state of Tamil Nadu in India. A flag was proposed for the state in 1970 but was not formally adopted at that time. 1970 flag proposal The Government of Tamil Nadu proposed a design for a state flag in 1970. The proposed design was grey with the flag of India in the canton and the Emblem of Tamil Nadu in the fly. It was proposed by newly elected Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party. At the time the proposal was opposed by the Chief Ministers of several other states and it was not officially adopted. Government banner The Government of Tamil Nadu can be represented by an image of the emblem of the state placed onto a white background. The emblem consists of the National Emblem of India flanked on either side by an Indian flag. The Emblem of Tamil Nadu is the official state emblem of Tamil Nadu and is used as the official state symbol of the Government of Tamil Nadu. It consists of the Lion Capital of Ashoka without the bell lotus foundation and flanked on either side by an Indian flag. Behind the capital, is the image of a ''Gopuram'' or temple tower based on the Srivalliputhur Temple. Designing The state emblem was designed in 1949 by artist R. The chief minister of Tamil Nadu is the chief executive of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In accordance with the Constitution of India, the governor is a state's ''de jure'' head, but ''de facto'' executive authority rests with the chief minister. A ''gopuram'' or ''gopura'' ( Tamil: கோபுரம், Malayalam: ഗോപുരം, Kannada: ಗೋಪುರ, Telugu: గోపురం) is a monumental entrance tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of a Hindu temple, in the South Indian architecture of the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana, and Sri Lanka. Tamil Thai Valthu (; ) is the state anthem of Tamil Nadu. The song was written by Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai, and composed by M. S. Viswanathan. Ever since the Tamil Nadu government under M. Karunanidhi issued an order on 23 November 1970, the official functions of the Government of Tamil Nadu, and those functions organised by educational institutions and public establishments, have started with this song, and ended with the Indian National Anthem. The song is sung daily in schools all over Tamil Nadu during the assembly in the morning. On 17 December, 2021, the Tamil Nadu government under chief minister M.K.Stalin, formally declared the song as the official state song, stating that it would be sung at all public events in educational institutes and government offices.
