Flag Of British Virgin Islands
The flag of the British Virgin Islands was adopted by Royal Warrant on 15 November 1960 after the islands were made into a separate British colony. Previously, the territory was administered as part of the British Leeward Islands. Description The flag of the British Virgin Islands features a defaced Blue Ensign with the Union Flag in the canton, and defaced with the coat of arms of the British Virgin Islands. The coat of arms, which date to the early nineteenth century, features Saint Ursula holding a flaming gold oil lamp and surrounded by a further eleven lamps, which represent her 11,000 virgin followers. The islands were named after these virgin followers by Christopher Columbus when he discovered the islands in 1493, the multiplicity of islands reminding him of the numerous followers. Blue Ensigns
Blue is one of the three primary colours in the RYB colour model (traditional colour theory), as well as in the RGB (additive) colour model. It lies between violet and cyan on the spectrum of visible light. The eye perceives blue when observing light with a dominant wavelength between approximately 450 and 495 nanometres. John Rankin (diplomat)
John James Rankin, (born 12 March 1957) is a British diplomat and a former ambassador to Nepal. He is the current Governor of the Virgin Islands, Governor of the British Virgin Islands. He was Governor of Bermuda from December 2016 to December 2020. Early life and education Rankin was born on 12 March 1957. He was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School, Hutchesons' Boys' Grammar School, an Independent school (United Kingdom), independent school in Glasgow, Scotland. He studied Scots law at the University of Glasgow, graduating with a first class honours Bachelor of Laws degree. He later studied international law at McGill University, graduating with a Master of Laws degree.
