Charles Barton (director)
Charles Barton (May 25, 1902December 5, 1981) was an American film and vaudeville actor and film director. He won an Oscar for best assistant director in 1933. His first film as a director was the Zane Grey feature ''Wagon Wheels'', starring Randolph Scott, in 1934. Barton worked in Hollywood B-movie units. From 1946, he was a principal director of the Abbott and Costello comedies, such as ''The Time of Their Lives'', ''Buck Privates Come Home,'' ''Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,'' and ''Africa Screams''. He later directed Walt Disney films such as '' The Shaggy Dog'' and ''Toby Tyler''. His extensive work for television included every episode of ''Amos 'n' Andy'' in the 1950s, a total of 90 episodes of '' Dennis the Menace'' in the 1960s, and 106 episodes of ''Family Affair'' from 1967 to 1971. A leading man during Hollywood's silent film era, Rawlinson transitioned to character roles after the advent of sound films. Early life Rawlinson was born in New Brighton, Cheshire, England, UK on 15 November 1885. He was one of the four sons and three daughters of Robert Theodore Rawlinson and his wife Emily. Viola Mallory Lawrence (December 2, 1894, New York City – November 20, 1973) is considered by many to be the first female film editor in Hollywood. She was nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing: for '' Pal Joey'' (1957), with Jerome Thoms; and for ''Pepe'' (1960), with Al Clark. Career She began working at Vitagraph Studios in Flatbush, Brooklyn as a messenger at the age of 11. At 12, she was holding title cards. In 1915, she became the second female film cutter in cinema history, after Anna McKnight, who also worked at Vitagraph. She married Frank Lawrence, her film cutting teacher at Vitagraph.
