Fiskum
Fiskum is a parish in the municipality Øvre Eiker in Buskerud, Norway. The parish name comes from the farm Fiskum. In the 17th century, Fiskum Manor (''Fiskum gård'') was a nobleman's estate. Among the owners were Governor-general Jens Hermansson Juel, Admiral Ove Gjedde and Governor-general Hannibal Sehested. The village of Darbu is the principal settlement in the parish. This is the site of Darbu Station as well as the local post office. There are two churches in Fiskum parish. Fiskum Old Church (''Fiskum gamle kirke'') was built in the 13th century in the village of Darbu. The medieval church was constructed in a rectangular shape, with a short, rectangular nave and lower and narrower, straight closed choir. The edifice is of brick and has 150 seats. The church has a gable roof, and the roof ridge, in the middle of the nave sits a turret. The church went out of active service in 1866 when it was replaced by a new church. Darbu
Darbu is a village within the parish of Fiskum, in the municipality of Øvre Eiker, Buskerud County, Norway. The population of the village was 539 as of 2019. Darbu is located on the Sørland Line Railway, 81.61 km from Oslo, about midway between Kongsberg and Hokksund. Darbu Station was opened in 1871 when the railway branch line between Hokksund and Kongsberg was completed. Fiskum Old Church (''Fiskum Gamle Kirke'') is the community's most important heritage site. Øvre Eiker
Øvre Eiker is a municipality in the traditional and electoral district Buskerud in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Eiker. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Hokksund. The old municipality of Eiker was divided into ''Øvre Eiker'' (upper Eiker) and ''Nedre Eiker'' (lower) on 1 July 1885. Randi Thorvaldsen
Randi Thorvaldsen (4 March 1925, in Øvre Eiker – 10 February 2011) was a Norwegian speedskater, silver medalist from the allround World Championship, and a previous World Record holder in 1,500 metres. She was the dominating female speedskater in Norway from the end of the Second World War to 1954. She was born in Fiskum, Øvre Eiker, and represented the club IF Liv, Hønefoss. National merits Thorvaldsen won the first national all-round speed skating championship held in Norway after World War II, in 1946. She became Norwegian all-round champion nine years in a row, every year from 1946 to 1954. In these championships she won 34 distances, out of 36 possible. She set ten national records during her career. Her national record on 5,000 m from 1953, 9:35.6, was unbeaten for 29 years, until 1982. Buskerud
Buskerud () is a former county and a current electoral district in Norway, bordering Akershus, Oslo, Oppland, Sogn og Fjordane, Hordaland, Telemark and Vestfold. The region extends from the Oslofjord and Drammensfjorden in the southeast to Hardangervidda mountain range in the northwest. The county administration was in modern times located in Drammen. Heinrich Ernst Schirmer
Heinrich Ernst Schirmer (27 August 1814 – 6 December 1887) was a German-born architect most noted for his work in Norway. Schirmer worked in Norway from 1838 to 1883 and left his mark on a number of public buildings. He contributed significantly to the introduction of the so-called Swiss architectural style in Norway, based partly on Italian villa style, Gothic Revival, and neoclassicism. Biography Schirmer was born in Leipzig, Germany. He was the son of Johan Gottlieb Schirmer and Johanne Sophie Kühne. He was the father of architect Adolf Schirmer. He received his architectural education at art academies in Dresden from 1831 to 1834, and in Munich from 1834 to 1837. In Munich he was influenced by German neoclassicist architect Leo von Klenze and his nation-building and urban design ideas. Jens Hermansson Juel
Jens Hermansson Juel or Jens Juel (born 8 January 1580 at Refstrup,Denmark died 26 March 1634 at Bøvling, Denmark) was a Danish nobleman who served as Governor-general of Norway from 1618 to 1629. Early years Juel attended the Sorø Academy from 1590 to 1596, and then had a seven-year educational trip with studies abroad, ending in 1603 when he became employed at the Danish chancery. He advanced quickly, being given major tasks: Danish Treasury (responsible for accounting, payment and collection of customs duties and taxes, as well as management of state property, including forests, roads and buildings) beginning in 1609, member of the Danish national council from 1616 and assignment to serve on several diplomatic missions. Ove Gjedde (27 December 1594 – 19 December 1660) was a Danish nobleman and Admiral of the Realm (''Rigsadmiral''). He established the Danish colony at Tharangambadi (Danish: ''Trankebar'') and constructed Fort Dansborg as the base for Danish settlement. He was a member of the interim government that followed the death of King Christian IV and which imposed restrictions (''Haandfæstning'') on his successor King Frederick III.
