First United Methodist Church (New Iberia, Louisiana)
First United Methodist Church is a historic church located in New Iberia, Louisiana. Built in 1891, the church suffered severe damage by fire in 1907 and was rebuilt by congregation to its present appearance. The Italian Renaissance style was created by decorating the original Gothic Revival building. Since 1907 the only structural alteration was the addition of an arcaded hallway in 1939, connecting the church to a newly constructed education building. New Iberia (french: La Nouvelle-Ibérie; es, Nueva Iberia) is the largest city in and parish seat of Iberia Parish, Louisiana, Iberia Parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The city of New Iberia is located approximately southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana, Lafayette, and forms part of the Lafayette metropolitan area, Louisiana, Lafayette metropolitan statistical area in the region of Acadiana. Italianate Architecture
The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Like Palladianism and Neoclassicism, the Italianate style drew its inspiration from the models and architectural vocabulary of 16th-century Italian Renaissance architecture, synthesising these with picturesque aesthetics. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. The movement gained momentum and expanded in the first half of the 19th century, as increasingly serious and learned admirers of the neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, intending to complement or even supersede the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time.
