First Terrace Records is an independent record label founded in 2016 by Alex Ives & Joseph Summers. First Terrace release music covering ambient, electronica, experimental, drone, jazz, modern composition & sound art. First Terrace have released music from artists such as Specimens, K. Leimer and the very well received Peter Broderick project ''The Beacon Sound Choir - 'Sunday Songs also featuring Machinefabriek. Label philosophy The name of the label and logo are inspired by Dante's ''Divine Comedy'' & the first level in Purgatorio. Depicting the souls of the proud bent over by the weight of huge stones on their backs in the face of sculptures expressing humility, the opposite virtue to pride which serves as an ethos for the label to remain humble. The original First Terrace logo was sketched by co-founder Alex Ives and is present on only one record, Specimens - 'Sculptures' LP. Specimens (musician)
Alex Ives (born 7 July 1989), known by his stage name Specimens, is an electronic, experimental, ambient & drone musician of British/ Jamaican descent based in London UK. Solo work as Specimens Starting out as a bedroom project in 2012, Ives officially released his first solo work under the name Specimens in 2015 with a Compact Cassette release on Shimmering Moods Records. He subsequently went on to release a number of cassettes on labels such as A Giant Fern & Tenderly Surrender ahead of his debut album 'Sculptures' in 2016. Also in 2016 Ives launched his own label First Terrace Records which has gone on to release artists such as Peter Broderick (Beacon Sound Choir), Chihei Hatakeyama, Anna Homler, Pierre Bastien & Machinefabriek. Pierre Bastien
Pierre Bastien (born 1953 in Paris) is a French musician, composer, and experimental musical instrument builder. Life and career Bastien began building mechanical-based musical instruments at an early age, using items such as metronomes, cymbals, and pulleys. In 1977, he began collaborating with Pascal Comelade and composing music for dance companies. He performed in ensembles such as Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods, and Effectifs de Profil. In 1986, he formed his own orchestra, Mecanium, composed of Meccano machines which play various instruments, such as Chinese lute, Moroccan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, and violin. These machines were often driven by the rotation of old turntables. By the 1990s, Mecanium consisted of up to 80 machine 'musicians', and toured various art and music festivals, including events in Norway, Australia, Japan, Canada, Poland, and the United States. Chihei Hatakeyama
is an electronic music artist from Tokyo, Japan. He grew up in the suburbs of Fujisawa. He released his first full-length album, ''Minima Moralia'' on Kranky in 2006. He is the owner of the record label White Paddy Mountain which he launched in 2010. Hatakeyama's music is characteristically very slow, composed by repeatedly processing guitars, pianos, and vibraphones on a laptop. The result is a mix of droning chords and sparse single instruments rising above the mix. His music may be classified as either ambient music, experimental music or new-age music. Anna Homler (born November 1, 1948 in Los Angeles, California) is a visual, performance, and vocal artist living and working in Los Angeles. She has performed music and exhibited her artworks in venues around the world. She earned a B.A. at the University of California, Berkeley, 1970, in Anthropology, and an M.A. in Education and Languages at Boston University, 1973. She graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School, Los Angeles.
