Boyle Travers Finniss
Boyle Travers Finniss (18 August 1807 – 24 December 1893) was the first premier of South Australia, serving from 24 October 1856 to 20 August 1857. Early life Finniss was born at sea off the Cape of Good Hope, Southern Africa, and lived in Madras, British India. He was later sent to Greenwich, England, for his education. He later entered the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, placing first of sixteen candidates at the entrance examination. In 1825 he became an ensign in the 88th Regiment of Foot, was promoted lieutenant in 1827 to the 56th (West Essex) Regiment of Foot, and then spent three years in Mauritius in the department of roads and bridges. Surveyor In 1835 Finniss sold off his commission and, having been appointed assistant surveyor under surveyor-general Colonel William Light, arrived in South Australia in September 1836. Finniss River (Northern Territory)
The Finniss River is a river south of Darwin, running west from the flank of Mount Minza, passing north of Litchfield National Park and flowing into the sea at Fog Bay. The East Branch of the Finniss was heavily polluted during the 1970s due to uranium mining at Rum Jungle mine about 105 km south of Darwin. The Finniss River Land Claim was presented to Judge John Toohey in 1981 but the former Rum Jungle mine site, contained within Area 4 of the Finniss River Land Claim (1981) was excluded from the grant to the Finniss River Land Trust due to the concerns of the Kungarakany and Warai peoples who are joint traditional Aboriginal owners of that area. Finniss River (South Australia)
The Finniss River drains part of the east side of Fleurieu Peninsula into Lake Alexandrina in South Australia. It is part of the Murray–Darling basin. The Finniss River starts east of Yundi and flows roughly east to its mouth in the Goolwa Channel of the lower Murray River, opposite Hindmarsh Island. It supports a wide range of flora (both natural and introduced weed species) and macroinvertebrates despite much of the catchment being cleared and grazed. During the 2006–2010 drought, low water levels in Lake Alexandrina and the outflows of the Finniss River and Currency Creek exposed acid sulfate soils which would normally be submerged. Temporary flow regulators were installed in August–September 2009 across the Goolwa Channel to maintain the water level to keep these soils wet to prevent more acid being leached out.
