Finlayson Industrial Area
The Finlayson industrial area is a historic industrial area in the centre of Tampere, Finland. It is located in the Finlayson (district), Finlayson district to the west of the Tammerkoski rapids, north of the Satakunnankatu street. Opposite the area to the east of Tammerkoski is the Tampella former industrial area. Neither of the areas remain in industrial use today, but many of the old industrial buildings remain in their place. The Finlayson (company), Finlayson factory was founded in 1820 by Scotland, Scottish industrialist James Finlayson (industrialist), James Finlayson. He commissioned a factory on the upper reaches of the Tammerkoski rapids. None of the original buildings commissioned by Finlayson remain to this day. Finlayson sold the factory to Carl Samuel Nottbeck and Georg Adolf Rauch in 1836. The new owners started to expand the factory. Riitta Nikula
Riitta Nikula (born 1944, in Helsinki), is a Finnish art historian, author and professor emeritus in art and architecture history at the University of Helsinki. She obtained her PhD from the University of Helsinki in 1981 with a study of the architecture of the Töölö region of Helsinki. She was Professor of Art History at the University of Helsinki from 1994 to 2007. Näsilinna
Näsilinna (; lit. "Näsi Castle") is a neo-baroque palace on Näsikallio in Tampere, Finland. It was built by Peter von Nottbeck, son of , a St. Petersburg-based industrial manager of Finlayson. The original name of the palace, completed in 1898, was Milavida. The building was designed by architect Karl August Wrede. The true meaning and history of the name ''Milavida'' is unknown. History The original Milavida, where von Nottbeck's family lived, was a wooden villa built in 1860 next to Näsikallio. However, the whole family did not have time to live in the new Milavida; only the children lived there for a couple of years with the servants. Peter's wife Olga von Nottbeck died while giving birth to twins in Baden-Baden in October 1898, and six months later Peter himself died after caecal surgery at a Parisian hospital. Finlayson Church
The Finlayson Church ( fi, Finlaysonin kirkko; sv, Finlaysons kyrka) is a church built in Gothic Revival style located in the Finlayson industrial area in the district by the same name in Tampere, Finland. It was built in 1879 as the church of the Finlayson cotton factory, where the factory workers could practice religion. Currently the church belongs to the Evangelical-Lutheran congregations of Tampere, and it is used as a children's road church and a popular church for weddings. History The church was built for the use of the Finlayson factory workers in 1879. It was built primarily as a place to practice religion, but the first working day of the year was started with a service there right until the 1970s. The Finlayson factory workers founded their own congregation from 1846 to 1860. The factory had its own priest, a factory preacher right until 1982.
