Finland competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, People's Republic of China. The athletes were named in four selections: first took place on December 19, 2007, 2nd on April 16, 3rd on May 20 and 4th on July 21, 2008. The goal of the Finnish Olympic team in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games was three medals with at least one gold medal. Shooter Juha Hirvi and dressage rider Kyra Kyrklund made Finnish olympic history by participating in their sixth Olympic Games. The Men's 10 metre air rifle event at the 2008 Olympic Games took place on August 11 at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall. Abhinav Bindra became the first ever individual Olympic champion of India. Athletics At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's Marathon
The men's marathon at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 24 August at 7:30am in Beijing, ending in the Beijing National Stadium. It was (as of today) the last time in Summer Olympics history that the start and/or finish of the men's marathon route was located inside the Olympic Stadium. Ninety-five athletes from 56 nations competed. The winner of the event was Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya, who set an Olympic record in the time of two hours, six minutes, and 32 seconds. It was Kenya's first victory in the men's marathon. Morocco won its first medal in the event since 1960, with Jaouad Gharib's silver. Tsegay Kebede of Ethiopia took bronze. Janne Holmén
Janne Sven-Åke Holmén (born 26 September 1977) is a Finnish former long-distance runner. Holmén's biggest achievement was winning the marathon event in the 2002 European Championships in Athletics in Munich, Germany, finishing in 2:12:14. In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Holmén finished in 22nd place, with the time 2:17:50. In the 2006 European Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg, Sweden, Holmén finished in seventh place with a time of 2:13:10. In the 2007 World Championships in Athletics Janne Hólmen took ninth place with time of 2:19:36. In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Holmén finished in 19th place, with the time 2:14:44. Cheng Chu Sian (; born 1 March 1986 in Kuala Lumpur) is an athlete from Malaysia, who competes in archery. 2008 Summer Olympics At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing Cheng finished his ranking round with a total of 660 points. This gave him the 26th seed for the final competition bracket in which he faced Matthew Gray of Australia in the first round, 109-101. With a win over Matti Hatava of Finland (110-103) he qualified for the third round and there he faced Lee Chang-Hwan of South Korea. Both archers scored 105 points in the regular match and had to go to an extra round. Here Cheng advanced with 19 points, while Lee hit 18 points. In the quarter finals Cheng was unable to beat Bair Badënov of Russia (109-104). Badënov went on to win the bronze medal. Simon Duncan Terry (27 March 1974 – July 2021) was a British archer from Grantham in Lincolnshire, England. Early life Terry was born on 27 March 1974 in Stirling, the son of Mike and Janice Terry. With the help of his father, Terry first began practising archery when he was eight years old. At the age of nine he won his first competition. At the time of the 1992 Summer Olympics, Terry was an unemployed roofer. The men's individual archery event at the 2008 Summer Olympics was part of the archery programme and took place at the Olympic Green Archery Field. Ranking Round was scheduled for 9 August. First and second elimination rounds took place on 13 August, and eights, quarterfinal, semifinals and medals matches were staged on 15 August. All archery was done at a range of 70 metres, with targets 1.22 metres in diameter. Matti Hatava
Matti Hatava (born March 10, 1981, Lappeenranta) is a Finnish archer who lives in Tampere and represents archery club Tampereen Jousiampujat. Hatava came 8th in the 1998 World Junior Championships, and represented Finland in the European Championships in 2000 and 2002. In 2002 Hatava took a break from active sport to pursue his personal career in banking. He returned to archery in the summer of 2007, coming third in the 2007 Finnish Championships. In 2008 Hatava finished second in the final Olympic qualification tournament held in Boé, France. Thus Hatava guaranteed a place for Finland at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Pertti Johannes Karppinen (born 17 February 1953) is a retired Finnish rower noted for his three consecutive Olympic gold medals in single sculls in 1976, 1980 and 1984. Biography Karppinen won the world titles in 1979 and 1985 and once held the world record in indoor rowing. His style was to row a steady race and finish with a devastating sprint. Heli Rantanen (born 26 February 1970) is a retired Finnish track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. She was an Olympic Champion, having won gold in 1996. Sylvi Saimo
Sylvi Riitta Saimo (née ''Sikiö'', 12 November 1914 – 12 March 2004) was a Finnish sprint canoeist, farmer and politician. She was the first female Finnish Olympic Champion at the Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in K-1 500 m at the 1952 Summer Olympics. She also competed in cross-country skiing, athletics and orienteering. She was a member of the Finnish Parliament from 1966 to 1978. Personal life Saimo was born in the former Finnish municipality of Jaakkima (currently Lakhdenpokhsky District, Russia) on 12 November 1914. She died in Laukaa in 2004.
