Finland competed at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. Finnish athletes won a total of 11 medals. The majority of these were awarded in speed skating, to Clas Thunberg and Julius Skutnabb. Cross-country Skiing At The 1924 Winter Olympics
At the 1924 Winter Olympics, two cross-country skiing events were held. The 50 km competition was held on Wednesday, 30 January 1924 and the 18 km competition was held on Saturday, 2 February 1924. The events were also part of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships as well, which would be combined until the 1980 Winter Olympics. Medal summary Medal table Events The results of Haug and Grøttumsbråten in the 18 km event should have been disqualified: as entrants of the Nordic combined event, they hadn't entered their names in this event. Tapani Niku wasn't however willing to be awarded the gold medal, though he later received a gold medal from the French Alp Club. All three medalists in the 50 km also finished in their same positions in the nordic combined event. Verner Eklöf
Verner Edmund Eklöf (8 March 1897 – 2 December 1955) was a Finnish sportsman active in the 1920s. Career Association football Eklöf played association football at international level, scoring 17 goals in 32 appearances between 1919 and 1927. Eklöf played club football for HIFK and HJK. His move from HIFK to HJK in 1920 is considered the first major transfer in Finnish football history. Väinö Bremer
Väinö Elias Bremer (24 April 1899 – 23 December 1964) was a Finnish biathlete, modern pentathlete, and pilot who competed in the 1924 Winter Olympics and in the 1924 Summer Olympics. He was born in Turku. In 1924 Winter Games he was a member of the Finnish military patrol team which won the silver medal. He also competed in the 1924 Summer Games and finished seventh in the Modern pentathlon event. After Olympic competition Bremer pursued aviation, including as a Captain in the Finnish Air Force. In 1927 he won the Finnish Harmon Trophy. He flew from Helsinki to Cape Town and back in 1933 in a Junkers A50 Junior, which was displayed in the Helsinki Airport from 1976 to 2018. Martti Lappalainen
Martti Eemil Lappalainen (11 April 1902 – 6 October 1941) was a Finnish cross-country skier and biathlete. Biography He was born in Liperi and was killed in action in Mäntysova, East Karelia. Lappalainen was a part of the Military patrol for Finland that took silver in the 1924 Winter Olympics. He won the 50 km cross-country skiing event at Holmenkollen ski festival in 1928. As a result of this victory, he became the second non-Norwegian winner of any event run up to that point, behind fellow Finn Anton Collin, who won the 50 km event in 1922. At the 1928 Winter Olympics he finished seventh in the 18 km event and ninth in the 50 km event. Four years later he finished fourth in the 18 km event at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. He also participated in the 50 km event but did not finish. Walter Jakobsson
Walter Andreas Jakobsson (6 February 1882 – 10 June 1957) was a Finnish figure skater, and the oldest figure skating Olympic champion (at age 38). As a single skater, he won the Finnish national championship in 1910 and 1911. In 1910, he partnered with German figure skater Ludowika Eilers. As pairs skaters, they won the World Championship in 1911, 1914, and 1923, and the Olympic gold in 1920. They finished second at the 1924 Olympics and fifth in 1928. Jakobsson studied engineering in Berlin, where he met Eilers in 1907. They married in 1911, and in 1916 moved to Helsinki, where Jakobsson got a job of the technical director of Kone OY (now Konecranes), a leading manufacturers of cranes. He held that post until retiring in 1947. Ludowika Jakobsson
Ludovika Antje Margareta Jakobsson-Eilers (née Eilers, 25 July 1884 – 1 November 1968) was a German-Finnish figure skater. Competing in pair skating with her husband Walter Jakobsson, she won the gold medal at the 1920 Summer Olympics, where she was the only German-born athlete, and became the oldest female figure skating Olympic champion. The pair also earned three world titles, in 1911, 1914 and 1923, and finished second and fifth at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, respectively. Eilers also had some success in single skating, winning a bronze medal at the 1911 World Championships. Early years Eilers met Jakobsson in 1907 while he was studying engineering in Berlin. Tapani Niku
Tapani Niku (born ''Karsikas'', 1 April 1895 – 6 April 1989) was a Finnish cross-country skier who competed at the 1924 Winter Olympics. He won a bronze medal in the 18 km event and failed to finish his 50 km event. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1926 he placed sixth over 50 km and 13th over 18 km. Niku won nine national titles, in the 10 km (1923–26), 30 km (1921, 1923 and 1925–26) and 60 km events (1925). He also won the 50 km race at the Lahti Ski Games in 1923–25. Matti Raivio (22 February 1893 – 25 May 1957) was a Finnish Cross-country skier who won the 30 km and 50 km events at the 1926 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
