Fine Cotton
Fine Cotton (29 November 1976 20 February 2009) was a brown Australian Thoroughbred gelding which was at the centre of a substitution scam (also known as a ring-in) which occurred on 18 August 1984, in the Commerce Novice (2nd division) Handicap over 1,500 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane, Queensland. Although there have been many ring-ins and other illegal scams in Australian racing, the Fine Cotton scandal is infamous in Australia due to the involvement of some of racing's elite. Fine Cotton was foaled on 29 November 1976, by Aureo from Cottonpicker by Delta. He was bred by the estate of the late G A Darke and W D Hayne, New South Wales. Before the race Fine Cotton was a horse of limited abilities that was racing in the southern areas of Queensland. The horse was eligible to race in restricted races (for horses with fewer than a certain number of wins) and even then had a poor record leading up to the substitution. Bold Personality
Bold Personality was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who gained notability by being substituted for the inferior horse Fine Cotton in a race at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane on 18 August 1984. The attempted scam is infamous in Australian history due to the involvement of some of racing's elite. Bold Personality, poorly disguised as Fine Cotton, won the race by a small margin after being backed from 33/1 into odds of 7/2, but Racing Stewards were suspicious and rumours of a ring-in quickly spread around the racecourse. A subsequent inquiry was held and the horse was disqualified. The horse trainer Hayden Haitana, and alleged organiser John Gillespie, were jailed and several people were ''warned off'' by the Australian Jockey Club. High profile bookmakers Bill and Robbie Waterhouse were two of the people warned off, for having had prior knowledge of the scam. Robbie Waterhouse
Robert Waterhouse is an Australian racing identity, businessman, form specialist, punter and bookmaker. Waterhouse is the son of Bill Waterhouse, he is married to thoroughbred horse trainer Gai Waterhouse, and is the father of bookmaker Tom Waterhouse. Career Waterhouse is a high-profile bookmaker who followed in the traditions of his father, Bill Waterhouse, a leading Sydney bookmaker and barrister. Rob Waterhouse first became a licensed bookmaker in 1972 and has worked in all codes: thoroughbreds; jumping; trotting; pacing, greyhounds; greyhound coursing and quarter horse racing. Bill Waterhouse
William Stanley Waterhouse (22 January 1922 – 22 November 2019) was an Australian bookmaker, businessman and barrister. Waterhouse was also Tonga's honorary Consul-General in Australia. Early years and background Waterhouse was educated at Greenwood Primary School and North Sydney Boys High. He completed an Arts/Law degree at Sydney University in 1948. Bookmaking career He had worked as a bookmaker's clerk since 1938 with his father, who was first licensed as a bookmaker in 1898. Waterhouse became a barrister in 1948 but took leave of absence in 1954 after the sudden death of his brother and partner, Charles, and never returned, making bookmaking his full-time career.
