Harry Beaumont
Harry Beaumont (10 February 1888 – 22 December 1966) was an American film director, actor, and screenwriter. He worked for a variety of production companies including 20th Century Fox, Fox, Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, Goldwyn, Metro Pictures Corporation, Metro, Warner Brothers, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Career Beaumont's greatest successes were during the silent film era, when he directed films including John Barrymore's ''Beau Brummel (1924 film), Beau Brummel'' (1924) and the silent youth movie ''Our Dancing Daughters'' (1928), featuring Joan Crawford. He then directed MGM's first talkie musical, ''The Broadway Melody'' (1929). The latter film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, Best Picture Academy Award that year, and Beaumont was nominated for Academy Award for Best Director, Best Director. Helen Ferguson (July 23, 1901 – March 14, 1977) was an American actress later turned publicist. Biography Born in Decatur, Illinois, in 1901, Ferguson graduated from Nicholas High School of Chicago and the Academy of Fine Arts. Ferguson was a newspaper reporter before entering the motion picture field. Ferguson began working in films as a stunt girl when she was 12 years old, although her first recorded credits are in 1917. She soon starred in roles for Fox Film Corporation by 1920, which is when her career really took off with films such as '' Hungry Hearts'' (1922) for Samuel Goldwyn. She was cast mostly in westerns, comedies, and serials. She was selected as a WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1922. On June 21, 1925, Ferguson married actor William Russell, who died in 1929. Louise Long (October 15, 1886 – July 14, 1966) was an American screenwriter, educator, author, and film editor active primarily in the 1920s and 1930s. Biography Long, a native of Central City, Nebraska, was the daughter of Noah Long and Lois Palmer. She moved to California with her family when she was in high school. She went on to attend the University of Southern California, where she met her friend and future collaborator Ethel Doherty. After college, Long and Doherty worked at L.A. public schools, but they'd dedicate their evenings to writing screenplays. Frustrated with their lack of success at selling their stories, they taught themselves shorthand and stenography and got jobs at Paramount (then Famous Players-Lasky). At night, they'd spend their time learning how to edit films. They eventually worked their way into editing roles at Paramount, making $15 a week, before moving into screenwriting at $450 a week. Virginia Valli (died September 24, 1968) was an American stage and film actress whose motion picture career started in the silent film era and lasted until the beginning of the sound film era of the 1930s. Early life Born Virginia McSweeney in Chicago, Illinois, she got her acting start in Milwaukee with a stock company. She also did some film work with Essanay Studios in Chicago, starting in 1916. Film career Valli continued to appear in films throughout the 1920s. She was an established star at the Universal studio by the mid-1920s.
