Filantropica
''Filantropica'' (alternate spellings ''Philanthropy'', ''Philanthropique'') is a 2002 Romanian dark comedy film directed by Nae Caranfil and starring Mircea Diaconu. Critically acclaimed and considered a landmark film of the Romanian New Wave, it is described as a "comedy about corruption and greed and how to get a free meal in fancy restaurants". Caranfil, the director, has a cameo appearance as a karaoke singer, singing Frank Sinatra's "My Way". Plot Ovidiu Gorea is a jaded high-school teacher and novice writer in his mid-40s who is still living with his parents. Nae Caranfil
Nae Caranfil (; also Nicolae Caranfil) (born 7 September 1960) is a Romanian film director and screenwriter. Career Born in Bucharest, Nae Caranfil is the son of important Romanian film historian and critic Tudor Caranfil. He graduated in 1984 from the Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography (UNATC) in Bucharest, where he has also taught as a professor. In the beginning of his career he directed only short films: ''Venice in September'' (1983), ''Thirty Years of Insomnia'' (1984), and ''Backstage'' (1988). Caranfil made his feature film debut with ''E Pericoloso Sporgersi'' (1993) and continued with road movie comedy ''Asfalt tango'' starring Charlotte Rampling (1996) and with ''Dolce far niente'' (1998). Florin Zamfirescu
Florin Zamfirescu (; born 12 April 1949) is a Romanian theatre and film actor and director, and university professor. Zamfirescu was born in Călimănești, Vâlcea County; his grandfather, Gheorghe Zamfirescu, was mayor of the town. He graduated from the Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest in 1971. From 1971 to 1973, he was an actor in the Municipal Theatre of Târgu Mureș, and subsequently moved to the Odeon Theatre in Bucharest. From 1974 to 1978 he was an instructor Caragiale National University; in 1996 he became a professor, and from 2000 to 2008 he served as rector of the university. In 2002 he received Ph.D. in Arts, with thesis "Acting or Magic". In 2014 he was let go from the Odeon Theatre by its director, . Mircea Diaconu (; born 24 December 1949) is a Romanian actor, writer, and politician. First appearing on stage in 1970, and on screen two years later, Diaconu pursued a lengthy career in both formats, working with a series of prominent directors. He acted in some sixty films through the 2000s, and continued to act in theatre during the ensuing decade. He took part in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. In 2008, he entered electoral politics, becoming a senator, and subsequently serving a term as a Member of the European Parliament. In 2019, he ran for president, placing fourth.
