Fiji National Basketball Team
The Fijian national basketball team is the team that represents Fiji in international basketball, administered by the Fiji Amateur Basketball Federation. It is a member of FIBA Oceania. The men's team are led by New Zealand NBL player Marques Whippy and his brothers Leonard and Waymann. Their father, Paul Whippy, has previously coached the men's team. In 2007, the men's team won the gold medal at the South Pacific Games. FIBA Oceania Championship
FIBA Oceania Championship was the Oceania basketball championships that took place every two years between national teams of the continent. Through the 2015 edition, the Oceania Championship was also a qualifying tournament for the Basketball World Cups and Olympic Games. When only Australia and New Zealand competed, the tournament was usually a best-of-three playoff; if other teams competed, a round-robin and a knockout stage was employed. In 2009, the Oceania Basketball Federation changed this format to a two-game, home-and-away playoff between the two countries, with aggregate score as the tiebreaker should the teams split the series. Beginning in 2017, all FIBA continental championships for men were held on a four-year cycle, and the continental championships would no longer be part of the qualifying process for either the World Cup or Olympics. 2007 Pacific Games
The 2007 South Pacific Games were held in Apia, Samoa, from 25 August to 8 September 2007. The Games were the thirteenth to be held since the inception of the South Pacific Games in 1963, and included traditional multi-sport event disciplines, such as athletics and swimming, alongside region-specific and smaller events such as outrigger canoeing, surfing and lawn bowls. The principal venue for the Games was Apia Park, with other events taking place at the Faleata Sporting Complex and at other locations around Samoa. The cost of the games was reported to be US$92 million, and resulted in significant government debt for Samoa due to infrastructure projects which included replacement bridges and roads. Fiji Women's National Basketball Team
Fiji women's national basketball team is the national basketball team from Fiji, administered by the Fiji Amateur Basketball Federation. They played in the 2007 Oceania Championship in Dunedin. History Due to their gold medal win at the 2015 Pacific Games, Fiji was given a berth at the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup. After the final match against American Samoa at the Pacific Games, Fiji did not play a competitive match until their FIBA Asia Cup debut. At most Fiji could use eight players out of the twelve named for the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup, due to the unavailability of the four other players. Fiji finished sixth in the tournament.
