Figure Skating At The 1972 Winter Olympics
The figure skating events at the 1972 Winter Olympics were held at the Makomanai Skating Rink and the Mikaho Indoor Skating Rink. The results of both the men's and ladies' singles events were dominated by placements in the compulsory figures, which at the time were nominally worth 50% of the total score but in fact weighted more heavily than the free skating due to being judged using a wider range of marks. In the men's event, Ondrej Nepela, the winner of the compulsory figures segment, took the gold in spite of placing only 4th in the free skating after falling on his triple loop jump. The free skating winner was Sergei Chetverukhin, who skated one of his best performances at this event to take the silver medal. Patrick Péra, second in the figures, had a poor free skating in which he fell on a triple salchow jump early in his program and then made other mistakes. Makomanai Ice Arena
Makomanai Sekisui Heim Ice Arena (真駒内セキスイハイム アイスアリーナ) is an indoor ice skating arena in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Japan. It was built in December, 1970, holds 11,500 people (10,024 seats, fixed plus temporary, and 1,476 standing places), and has an area of 10,133 m² in total. Toller Cranston
Toller Shalitoe Montague Cranston, CM (April 20, 1949 – January 24, 2015) was a Canadian figure skater and painter. He won the 1971–1976 Canadian national championships, the 1974 World bronze medal and the 1976 Olympic bronze medal. Despite never winning at the World Figure Skating Championships due to his poor compulsory figures, he won the small medal for free skating at the 1972 and 1974 championships. Yuri Ovchinnikov (figure Skater)
Yuri Lvovich Ovchinnikov (russian: Юрий Львович Овчинников; born 3 June 1950 in Leningrad) is a Russian figure skating coach and former competitor for the Soviet Union. He is the 1975 European bronze medalist, 1976 Prize of Moscow News champion, and 1975 Soviet national champion. Gordon Riley "Gordie" McKellen Jr. (born August 26, 1953) is an American former competitive figure skater. He is the 1973–75 U.S. national champion and placed tenth at the 1972 Winter Olympics. Personal life McKellen was born on August 26, 1953, in Reading, Pennsylvania. His parents, Leila and Gordon "Tuffy" Sr., owned an ice rink, and his father was a member of the 1940s ice skating duo, the McKellen Brothers. In 1977, McKellen married American figure skater Kath Malmberg, who gave birth to their two children in the 1980s. Career McKellen won three consecutive U.S. national titles. John Curry
John Anthony Curry, (9 September 1949 – 15 April 1994) was a British Figure skating, figure skater. He was the 1976 1976 European Figure Skating Championships, European, Figure skating at the 1976 Winter Olympics, Olympic and World Figure Skating Championships, World Champion. Vladimir Kovalev
Vladimir Nikolayevich Kovalyov (russian: Владимир Николаевич Ковалёв; born 2 February 1953) is a retired figure skater who competed internationally for the USSR. He is an Olympic silver medalist and 2-time World champion. He trained at VSS Trud in Moscow. Career Kovalyov placed second behind his British rival John Curry at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Jan Hoffmann (born 26 October 1955) is a German figure skater who represented East Germany in competition. A four-time Olympian, he is the 1980 Olympic silver medalist, the 1974 & 1980 World Champion, and a four-time (1974, 1977–1979) European Champion. Uwe Kagelmann
Uwe Kagelmann (born 6 September 1950 in Dresden, Saxony, East Germany/GDR) is a German former competitive pair skater. Competing with Manuela Groß, he was twice bronze medalist at the Olympics. He later became a figure skating coach. The pair skated for the SV Dynamo club and represented East Germany. Their coach was Heinz-Friedrich Lindner. Manuela Groß
Manuela Manja Groß (later Leupold, born 29 January 1957 in East Berlin, East Germany) is a German former competitive pair skater. With partner Uwe Kagelmann, she is a two-time Olympic bronze medalist, and she is the youngest female figure skating Olympic medalist. She turned 15 just four days before the opening of the 1972 Winter Olympics, held in Sapporo, Japan, where she won her first bronze medal in pairs skating. Groß began figure skating in Berlin. She was paired with Uwe Kagelmann. They skated for the SC Dynamo Berlin club representing East Germany. Their coach was Heinz-Friedrich Lindner. Andrei Alexandrovich Suraikin (russian: Андрей Александрович Сурайкин; 20 October 1948 -28 September 1996) was a Russian pair skater. With partner Liudmila Smirnova, he was the 1972 Olympic silver medalist. Career Suraikin began figure skating in 1957 and became a member of the USSR National Team in 1968. He trained at Spartak in Leningrad. Suraikin competed with Liudmila Smirnova, coached by Maya Belenkaya. Smirnova and Suraikin won the silver medal at the 1972 Winter Olympics. Liudmila Smirnova
Lyudmila Stanislavovna Smirnova (russian: Людмила Станиславовна Смирнова; born July 21, 1949, in Leningrad) is a retired pair skater who competed for the Soviet Union. With partner Andrei Suraikin, she is the 1972 Winter Olympic silver medalist. With her then-husband Alexei Ulanov, she is a two-time World silver medalist.
